It's hard to believe that it is our 1st anniversary already. To celebrate, we are going to bring you up to date on the "sexiest super heroine" in the world with a review of #5. Did she improve with age? Has Scott scored yet? Did yours truly get yet another letter printed in the SINN BIN? Read on and see! Remember those STATIC ads in the DC and Milestone comics hyping the fact that it had won something called a SQUIDDY award? Well, any comic fan that frequents cyberspace as well knows about the Usenet Newsgroups and the rec.arts.comics group of discussion areas found there. The annual poll they take to pick their favorite comic artists, stories, and so forth are named after the The Suicide Squid (no I am not going to explain what it means, go find the FAQ file and join the fun) I have listed this years winners and, in the close races, a few of the runner ups. The taste is heavily toward DC based on the winners with an Image title thrown in for good measure. Plus a terrific list of comic related web sites for your surfing pleasure! On a sadder note, no sooner did I heap praise on the continued availability of the Comic Shop News feature, CSNsider, via Email and the World Wide Web, than I got a message from Ward that they are discontinuing sending it out electronically. Before anyone asks, we can't even re-type it after it is published as permission to duplicate it will no longer be granted. Read why in this issue. The network is slowly getting back to normal, and just like in the comics The Daily Planet, our super node BBS, threatens to rise from the ashes this week. Look for a partial node list in this issue and CALL one of the nodes to join our network! Oh yeah, please take note of our updated Email address, Web page, and submissions policy. Don't you hate details when moving? Batty & C. Biggers Subject - CSNsider From - wardo@netdepot.com (Ward Batty) Date - Mon, 19 Feb 1996 I've some bad news, we are going to have to discontinue posting the CSNsider on the internet. We've had complaints from retailers about it. Retailers who support Comic Shop News by buying it is what keeps the paper in business and us employed. Our first responsibility is to them. Starting next week we'll be replacing the CSNsider with a more general "coming in CSN" piece, but this will be more an ad than news, and will just run in comics.misc. The CSNsider in #455 is larger than ever, and will be in shops March 7th. If your shop doesn't carry CSN, please ask for it and look for a shop that does. It is free to you and only costs the shop a dime each. Thanks to everyone for their support and kind words. Our site remains active. We've a list of shops that carry CSN there, and will start previewing some of the art from upcoming issues of CSN. The BUZZ reports that a struggle for his services resulted from his signing a $6 million deal for the lead in "The Saint" with Paramount while Warner has an ironclad contract for another Batman gig. The other dirt is that Val flirted with the new deal but hedged on it so it would not factor into his bitter divorce fight. He apparently surfaced as having taken the role and Warner served notice that he better show up AUGUST 1 ready to strike fear into the hearts of criminals. Word is he put up "creative roadblocks" like the title, "BATMAN & ROBIN" (top billing is everything and he would be the sole star in "The Saint") and wanted his own man on the script. The gulf in pay is the biggest factor, since he got $2 Million to replace Keaton but couldn't hope to make six on the sequel. Outcome, WB has threatened to sue but would probably let the hard to work with Kilmer off the hook if George Clooney gets the nod to replace him. Stay tuned. +++++ PETER DAVID reports that SPACE CASES, the half-hour live action SF TV series he created with Bill Mumy will debut on Nickelodeon on Saturday, March 2, at 9 PM EST. +++++ This timely update from WALT SIMONSON about STAR SLAMMERS: Date: Wed, 21 Feb 96 I'm delighted to be able to announce at long last that the Star Slammers, my creator owned project from a zillion years ago, has found a new home at Dark Horse Comics. The title will be coming out under the Legend imprint. First up will be the fifth and final issue of the aborted limited series begun in the Bravura line from Malibu. It will contain the concluding chapter of the Rojas story, a new four page prologue that summarizes the first four chapters of the story in comics form, and a couple of pin-ups by those tired old hacks, John Byrne and Frank Miller. Ship date for the issue is early June. Best/Walter Simonson +++++ The Silver Surfer is finally heading for the Silver Screen? ...so reports Variety this week, and it will happen due to the fact that the effects technology to make it believable is finally here, as demonstrated in T2! Marvel's Avi Arad will executive produce it no doubt with good ol' Stan Lee looking over his shoulder. Fox Family films landed the rights for this one. We have yet to see a live action feature based on Marvel characters that made it big but this could be the one. We'll see. +++++ In other Marvel news, Cloud 9 Interactive announced an agreement with MARVEL CHARACTERS INC., to develop, publish and produce four CD-ROMs based on Marvel characters. The CD-ROMs will feature techniques for drawing, writing storylines for comics, the history of comic book villains, and female super heroes. The first will hit the shelves in 3rd quarter 1996 and they plan to release one a year. The first title will feature interactive lessons on drawing X-Men, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, and other classic Marvel characters. +++++ Speaking of Bravura, Steven Grant, creator of EDGE and writer of "X" and "Isaac Asimov's I-Bot's", has said that he is working on a screenplay for an "X" movie AND that ENEMY is in development for Fox TV! +++++ Walt Stone has informed us that Omni Comics is not going to put out Issue #4. Penthouse Comix and Men's Adventure Comix will continue along the same as before, though. OMNI COMICS #3 (the only OMNI to ever be self-bound, as the #1 and #2 were simply inserts in OMNI magazine) did manage to break even according to his source, even without any advertising, but other factors make it a no go for now. +++++ ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [4] 1995 SQUIDDIES [Editor's note: Every year people who frequent the Usenet Newsgroups in the recreation.arts.comics hierarchy vote on their favorites of the prior year. Gerald Delaney - art, inks on back up story Pia Guerra - pencils on backup One of the few black and white comics I read is this wonderful self published effort from Canada. Now in its second year Sinnamon has "made the big time" by actually making it into the Wizard price guide! (heh> Don't take my word for it, check it our - this comic has the *best* cover art of ANY comic out there. It puts ALL the bad girl comics from the mainstream industry to shame with a truly beautiful and correctly proportioned female so well done you can't believe it is not a photo! Mr. Delaney is a terrific talent who could probably just do covers for big bucks for the rest of his career, he's that good. The interiors, without the shiny color of the cover, are done to play off the black and white with equal expertise. Make no mistake, this is a babe comic on one level and he get draws them in all sizes and varieties which is refreshing. The 4 page backup shows Pia Guerra is equally talented and I anxiously await a full story in the upcoming BRUISER #1 from MYTHIC COMICS in March. The reason I started reading this is Angelo Furlan, the writing half of Catfish Comics. After 4 issues we have several plots going at once. Our heroine is being courted, with little success, by her neighbor Scott because she is too pre-occupied with do-gooding. Her origin is tied up in a place called "The facility" people who are helping her keep her super powers a secret while it appears that one of their employees is willing to talk these days. We have a group of females who are trying to get her to join up with their super normal group, and are nearly killing her in the attempt. There is Pyre-Anna who is going around frying people, literally, and Heartbreaker who rapes women and then calls the police before he leaves just decided to increase his fun by killing and maiming some bikers. Each issue has some celebrity "guest stars" and this one has Robert Dole and Hugh Grant stuck in the middle of a brawl in a nudey bar both wondering how to explain it to Liz if they get caught. The back story fills us in on characters from Angelo's other series, BRUISER which will cross over next issue. Lots of stuff, plenty of fun and great art to look at. The plots are involved to the point where enough is left to make you wonder who is doing what and why. Hey! Mystery, action, humor, and good looking babes! It don't get better than that! Rating: I don't *do* ratings. Buy this book! P.S.- About whether I had a letter printed in the Sinn Bin? You gotta buy one to find out! *8^) ...---====*David LeBlanc> david.leblanc@mailtrain.com RIME->15 ComicBkNet@AOL.COM FIDO 1:322/743.1 http://members.aol.com/ComicBkNet ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [6] New Comics Shipping 2/26/96, by Bobb Waller Here is the list of what is supposed to ship the week of 2/26/96 from the various comic companies. I got the latest "issue" of CBEM today and was pleased to see your name in the editor's slot! I know you'll do a great job! I thought the "mag" was quite informative, and I'll look forward to future issues, wherever they're ready to be delivered. Yes, I understand all about wanting to wait until the product is "just right". Could I be added to the subscriber's list? It seems too good a read to let pass by. BTW, if you're ever looking for articles from publicity-starved publishers ... ;> +++++ Angelo is the writer, Publisher, and chief cook and bottle washer of Catfish Comics which publishes SINNAMON. I couldn't resist putting him in our letter column (since his was the only one so far) because I have been in his letter columns. And THIS issue of CBEM should really get him going! *8^) ++++++++++ If you want to comment on this or any previous issue, want to offer something for us to publish, or just want to shamelessly suck up to the editor to try and get your name in print send Email to: ComicBkNet@aol.com Note: letters of comment may be used in future issues of the CBN E-Mag unless you specifically request us NOT to use them. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [9] How to join the COMIC BOOK NETWORK You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However, many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS echo-mail system.... Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the continent and the world, many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you have the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network... There are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!) conversation. If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer system. They all give you a better explanation in their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are free to download from most BBS's. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is LESS THAN 75›! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial information services available! :) So what else can you find on free BBS systems? There are plenty of files for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online games. Join into the many different multi player games, each system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most powerful being in a online adventure! And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of replies and all the help you need to join in the fun! ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [10] BBSes Linked into CBN We are rebuilding our connections and probably have more BBS nodes connected than we know right now. On our web page, you can find the latest issue of our E-Mag, as well as an annotated index and all back issues. You'll also find important information on how to join the conversation in the Comic Book Net, and other neat features! The URL address is: http://members.aol.com/ComicBkNet LOCATING THE ISSUES ------------------- The latest issue is always available from all the systems linked into The Comic Book Network. You can also find the back issues at America Online, by going to Keyword: Science Fiction, scrolling to the menu item _ Comic Book Forum_ and then going to the Comics Library from there. Most issues should also be available on Compuserve, Genie, Channel1 BBS and Software Creations BBS as well as other non CBN affiliated Bulletin Board Systems. All back issues should be available at the above sites, as well as our World Wide Web page. SUBMISSIONS ----------- To submit an article, review, column, etc to our e-mag, simply post it in any Comic Book Net conference and leave me a message in the CBN: E-Mag conference giving me permission to use the article. If you cannot access the Comic Book Net, submit your articles for consideration to the editor at: ComicBkNet@aol.com Reviews of mainstream books are least likely to get included when submitted from sources outside of CBEM. We give more consideration to reviews of indies and self published material as we feel that material deserves more exposure to the general public. Commentary on the state of the industry, and personal observations and reflections related to comics are *most* likely to be included in our publication. We also accept product for review purposes. Advanced copies of comic books will not be returned but anything sent to us will be reviewed in the ComicBook Net Emag. Send all material to: David L. LeBlanc 84 Heather Circle Jefferson, MA 01522 SUBSCRIPTIONS ------------- If you wish to receive these issues automatically through your internet account, please address a message to ComicBkNet@aol.com to be placed on the subscription list. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - End of Issue #47.. see ya in the funnyy papers!!
