The fact that each of these items appeared almost simultaneously indicates people are really trying to tap into the resources of the Internet to further the expansion of comic fandom, and that is great! Beginning April 18, one page of the story (written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by John McCrea) will be posted to the web site each weekday, and then removed after two weekdays. The serialization will continue through all 44 pages of the storyline. With issue #83 arriving in comic book stores on April 24, visitors to DC's web site will be able to view both the cover and the first four pages of "Infected" before any other readers. The preview web page, in addition to the full-color art from BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT, contains a biography of Batman, a description of the title, a list of all the current issues of the Batman titles published by DC, and a list of all the Batman books available from DC's backlist. The site also informs readers that BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT and the backlist items are available at comic book specialty stores. The art can be viewed at full-screen size, and the cover can be viewed for the entire run of the serialization. "This is the first time we've done this with a DC super-hero project," says Greg Ross, DC's Editor of Multi-Media Publishing. "The reason that this title was picked to go on the web is to expose it to potential readers outside the normal fan base, as well as to give a present to the fans with a full color preview rather than a black-and-white copy. DC has had amazing success with our online productions, particularly when it comes to fan activity. This marks another great step forward in our exploration of this new communications technology." The DC web site, featuring the "Infection" serialization page, will have pointers to it from DC Comics Online on America Online as well as from the Warner Bros. web site. The serialization web page can also be accessed directly at http://www.dccomics.com/lodk. +++++ Subject: WWW: indy Magazine Web Site From: jrm@grove.ufl.edu (Geoffrey R Mason) Date: 18 Apr 1996 14:36:25 GMT Hey there, I would love if you would check out the indy Magazine Web Site! Also sorry you did not stump the readers as one lone soul managed to get it right. Equally amazing, is the fact that I got his guess on Monday, not on Saturday as nearly all the previous winners have jumped right on each question. All reports say he is recovering well and the prognosis is good. Fans are requested NOT to send anything to the hospital or to try to telephone their respects as the Ellisons have been swamped with well-intentioned callers. Post cards may be the nicest, non-intrusive method to say get well but don't ask me for an address. AND Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor is slated to return in June as a quarterly prestige format book from Dark Horse ($5.95). +++++ Posted to America Online this week: Subj: Leave it to Chance From: Jeff Mariotte Leave it to Chance, by writer James Robinson and artist Paul Smith, is joining Kurt Busiek's Astro City and Terry Moore's Strangers in Paradise in the Homage Comics line-up. Leave it to Chance is the first all-new project from Homage Comics, the creator-owned line launching in July from Jim Lee's WildStorm Productions. Leave it to Chance is a fantasy comic book intended for all ages and both sexes. According to Robinson, " It presents a positive female role model, but in a world full of high drama and dark shadows, with enough crime, horror, and fantasy to appeal to everyone." Chance is Chance Falconer, 14 year old daughter of Lucas Falconer, occult investigator and protector of the city of Devil's Echo. Chance wants to assume the mantle of Devil's Echo's arcane protector when she assumes womanhood -- much to her father's chagrin. To prove herself worthy, Chance gets involved in any mystery that comes her way, with her devoted dragon, St. George, as her companion and protector. Chance's co-creator Paul Smith said, "For you to believe, I have to believe first. I believe in Chance. I respect Chance. Finally, a book I wouldn't have been embarrassed or ashamed to show my mother, or need be fearful of giving to a child. At times I wish I weren't drawing this book because it's one I'd love to read." "Although the other titles in the Homage Comics line are well-known existing series, I think Leave it to Chance can more than stand with them," Jim Lee said. "James Robinson and Paul Smith have certainly proved their abilities many times over. With its appeal to kids, to women and girls, and its fresh, charming storytelling, Chance is an ideal comic for today's changing market" Robinson is well known as the critically-acclaimed writer for DC's Golden Age, Malibu's Firearm, and a popular run on WildC.A.T.S, from WildStorm Productions. He is currently writing Starman for DC. Paul Smith's extensive credits include Uncanny X-Men, Dr. Strange, Mike Mahogany, Batman, Nexus, and Golden Age. Of his invitation to join Homage Comics, Robinson said, "I enjoyed my tenure on WildC.A.T.S, and appreciated the trust that was placed in me by being handed WildStorm's flagship title to run with. I'm thrilled to be part of Jim Lee's stable yet again, and grateful for the opportunity to publish my collaboration with Paul, and to stand beside such luminaries as Kurt Busiek, Brent Anderson, and Terry Moore." Smitty added, "Jim Lee could've taken over the world, but nooooo! True to his comic book upbringing, he's used his powers for good and not for evil. Through Homage, Jim's provided Chance both safe haven and illustrious company. It's great to be aboard." Leave it to Chance debuts as a monthly miniseries in September 1996. +++++ THE RUMOR THAT WON'T DIE! - is still being kicked around, that Marvel will go exclusive with Capital City Distributing. The latest addition to the scuttlebutt is that it will be announced at the San Diego Con. The other suggestion is that Fabian will be writing Bloodshot. All Fabian will say is that his decisions are not all made yet and don't believe everything you read from anonymous sources, some of it yes, but not all! +++++ From the Entertainment Wire April 15 - CYBERFROG is leaping to the top of the licensing world! Dark Horse has got X-Files for novels and graphic story albums. Twist and Shout Comics still has X-Flies though, and a new issue is out now! Onslaught is no longer Professor Xavier, and the X-writers have been informed. He is now the combined dark sides of Professor X and Magneto. Caliber will be publishing Paul Jenkins and Leo Duranona's Construct. A half-million print run football comic book is being put together for the Euro'96 competition. Beat that, Spawn! Dez Skinn has included old Warrior material by himself, Will Simpson, Grant Morrison and John Ridgeway in the new Comics International, masquerading as a flip book with Warrior Spring Special 1996. Is he going to be publishing comics full time again???? The words cards, close and chest spring to mind. More firings at Marvel on the way? Soon it will be employing minus people, from the Negative Zone, no doubt. Dwyer has left Action Comics and Grummett is taking over, after losing Generation X when Bachalo returned. Staz Johnson will take over his duties on Superboy. Calvieri is consolidating his position and Louise Simonson, Jon Bognadove and Stuart Immomen may be on the way out. Perez will be inking Teen Titans. Gene Colan is working on a new Predator series as Gil Kane works on Star Wars. John Byrne is to revamp Doom Patrol as reported... but not for at least a year. Claremont and Hughes are off Star Trek/X-Men, instead we get Scott Lobdell and Marc Silvestri. I know one McMahan who'll be pleased anyway... Silvestri will continue to do X-Men work. Caliber is raking over the bones of Tundra finding bits by Moebius, Alan Moore and others to publish. Watch Doom 2099 to be a hot book as artist Jeff Lafferty takes on the book's last issues. Low print run, new hot artist, get there soon! And where have all the issues of Sliders gone to? Another dimension or a speculator bin? This is Richard Johnston, in London, signing off with another pleas for you to go out and buy X-Flies Conspiracy. Hey , I give you all this info, how about some payback? 8-) ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [5] Recommended Reading #3 by Joseph Torres CHRISPY BACON By Chris Howard You might think you've accidentally picked up some never-before-seen Charles Schulz material when you first take a gander at this gem. "Chrispy Bacon" is a labor of love by one Chris Howard, a pillar of the vibrant Toronto minicomic scene. His art here isn't only reminiscent of "Peanuts" it *is* the very same comic style. What Chris has done here is oh-so clever: while everyone and their Aunt May is out there cloning Todd Macfarlane, Chris goes and decides he wants his characters to look very much like Snoopy's human friends. And it works. Really well. Like one of those things that makes you think, "Why didn't I think of that?". Now, don't be expecting to see cameos by Peppermint Patty and Marcy, Chris has a cast of his own cute, endearing large-headed characters. Actually, he's one of them as this is an autobiographical book. But don't let the cartoon style fool you, this minicomic deals with some "mature" subject matter like the wandering eye of the already-spoken-for main character and his getting engaged and moving in with his girlfriend (you're a good man, Charlie Brown, but you never had to agonize over these things). In the tradition of some of the best slice-of-life comics out there "Chrispy Bacon" is one of those reads that makes you sigh contentedly, with the turn of that last page, knowing full-well that you are not alone. There are two issues of "Chrispy Bacon" thus far. Write to: Chris Howard at for ordering details. XENO'S ARROW By Greg Beettam & Stephen Geigen-Miller "Xeno's Arrow" is the story of a cute alien space creature who looks like the lovechild of E.T. and L'il Orphan Annie. Now if just the thought of what this character looks like makes you grin, wait until you read the actual book which will have you laughing out loud sure enough. Take the story of Noah's Ark, throw in elements of "Alice in Wonderland", mix in a sense of humour worthy of Monty Python and the SF influence of Douglas Adams and you just might have the recipe for this tasty mini... Xeno is the last of his race. All his short life he's lived in a zoo-like space station where he is taught how to be "civilized" by an amusingly hoity-toity race of lizard-like aliens. Before long, his sheltered existence is disrupted when an enigmatic rat/rabbit-like creature named Clemens enters his life by sneaking into his "environment" (read: cage) when the "zoo keepers" aren't around. During her visits she tempts Xeno to discover the world outside the four walls he calls his home. Soon, a curious and adventurous Xeno does some sneaking around himself and scales the wall dividing his home and that of his next-door neighbor X'nyd'n (pronounced "zinidin"), a nervous and sickly creature who looks like a cross between Lewis Carroll's mock-turtle as a cyborg and that Mr. Bumpy claymation character on ABC's Saturday morning cartoon line-up. Well, as if all this forbidden mingling and sneaking around wasn't enough excitement for the characters (and reader), a daring and amusing "prison break" is staged and... But that would be giving it all away. This zany romp is brought to you by Greg Beettam and Stephen Geigen-Miller. And let me tell you, these guys have something *really* special here. the storytelling and the art are lightyears ahead of most SF/fantasy comics I've seen in recent memory. And best of all, it really makes me laugh and wish that there were more truly fun books like this out there. Write to: Cup O'Tea Studios/P.O.Box 63, Station D/Toronto, Ontario/M5S 2S6/Canada for subscription and back issue ordering info. Pick up all five of the currently published issues. You will not regret it. GALAXION By Tara Jenkins "Galaxion" is a solo effort from writer/artist Tara Jenkins and the debut of the series as a book of its own (it was perviously published as one-half of the flip book "Salmagundi" from Helikon Comics). This first edition is my first exposure to "Galaxion" and let me say right off the bat that I definitely want to see more. The first thing that will impress you about "Galaxion" is the very clean, professional caliber art. The style is very much manga/anime influenced. In fact, I immediately thought "Robotech" when I first saw this book. I simply love the way this comic is laid out and I'm thoroughly impressed by the visual storytelling, the variations in the panel work and the overall high quality of the illustrations. That said, let's look at the story... Not much and a lot happens in this first issue entitled "A moment in time". We are introduced to a cast of characters including Aria, the star of the show. The series seems to revolve around her quest for lost friends. A "time jump" is the framing sequence of this tale and what's sandwiched in between is a flashback(?) of Aria's first meeting with the people she is now searching for. We don't know what has happened to them, but we know enough: Aria "had" become friends with these people we just "saw" her meet (in this issue); something "bad" has happened to them and Aria wants to rescue them. Although this is pretty much all we know, we already care about the characters and are intrigued enough by the story to want to see more of the past, present and future of the starship "Galaxion" and her crew. There's something about the way Tara makes the characters' personalities shine through in a minimal number of panels; she makes you want to get to know them better and by extension you want Aria's "mission" to succeed. And I want nothing more than Tara Jenkins to succeed in her mission to make this minicomic into a regular format comic one day... Contact Tara Jenkins at this e-mail address to order the first issue of "Galaxion": <75221.2650@compuserve.com>. ------------------------------------------------------------------ [+] j.torres [*] watch for "the copybook tales" [!] jtorres@cam.org [=] from slave labor graphics [x] montreal, quebec [$] may solicitation/july release ------------------------------------------------------------------ ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [6] SUSPENDED ANIMATION by Michael Vance COMICS LEGENDS He began his career as a teenager imitating the artistic style of Alex Raymond's comic strip masterpiece, FLASH GORDON. He es- tablished his name working with legendary artists like Frnak Frazetta and Roy Krenkel on the famous EC science fiction and horror titles of the 1950s. Today he continues as one of the most respected artists in the history of comic books and strips. But Al Williamson accepts praise with a twinkle in his eye, revealing a modesty that young artists would be wise to emulate. All art is abstracted; even a camera lens distorts reality. Williamson prefers a realistic approach to art founded on accurate lighting, perspective, human and animal anatomy and pose spiced with the wild creative energy of fantasy. When working, his worlds are populated with tiny dinosaurs, huge mushrooms, ancient alien cities and spacecraft. His comic strip work on TARZAN, FLASH GORDON, RIP KIRBY, BIG BEN BOLT, DAN FLAGG, SECRET AGENT CORRIGAN and STAR WARS is legendary. Some of these titles have been collected into volumes. His extensive career includes (but does not exhaust) work for American Comics Group (ADVENTURES INTO THE UNKNOWN, FORBIDDEN WORLDS), Atlas/Timely/Marvel (ADVENTURES INTO MYSTERY, ANNIE OAKLEY, ASTONISHING, STAR WARS), Charlton, (CHEYENNE KID, WILD BILL HICKOCK & JINGLES), DC Comics (GUNSMOKE, THE TWILIGHT ZONE), Gilberton, Harvey and many more. Williamson's most famous work was published in selected (and expensive) issues of CRIME SUSPENSTORIES, INCREDIBLE SCIENCE FICTION, THE VAULT OF HORROR, TALES FROM THE CRYPT and other EC comics. These have been reprinted several times in more affordable versions. THE ART OF AL WILLIAMSON by James Van Hise is an exceptional collection of this master cartoonist's work through 1983. Among the most affordable and accessible of his works are two issues of FLASH GORDON (Marvel Select, 1995). Williamson's work is highly recommended. Some older titles are expensive and difficult to locate. Price guides or comics dealers help. Comic shops, conventions, mail order companies and trade journals are best sources. Prices vary, shop around. (Mr. Vance is a professional writer having written for numerous magazines like CBG, Starlog and Comics Interview. His work has appeared in over 500 newspapers and he's had work published by Comico, Renegade, Innovation and Rip Off Press. SUSPENDED ANIMATION appears in 14 publications reaching 214,000 readers in the U.S., Ireland and Portugal.) ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [7] Top 50 Comics for April Source: Comic Shop News #461 Top sellers by *volume* as reported by dealer orders to Diamond and Capital City and sales by a cross section of comics specialty stores. 1.DC Versus Marvel 4 2.Wolverine 100 3.Uncanny X-Men 322 4.X-Men 52 5.Spawn 44 6.Wolverine 101 7.Generation X 15 8.Gen 13 #9 9.X-Factor 122 10.X-Man 15 11.Cable 31 12.Sandman 75 13.Death: The Time of Your Life 2 14.Excalibur 97 15.Lady Death:The Odyssey 1 16.Amazing Spider-Man 411 17.Sensational Spider-Man 4 18.Batman 530 19.Avengers 398 20.Spawn*WildCATs 3 21.WildCATs 27 22.Adventures of Superman 534 23.Superman 111 24.Superman:The Man of Steel 56 25.Action Comics 721 26.Incredible Hulk 441 27.Batman:Shadow of the Bat 50 28.Robin 29 29.Storm 4 30.Sin City:That Yellow Bastard 2 31.Spider-Man 68 32.Crow 2 33.Witchblade 4 34.Spectacular Spider-Man 233 35.Green Lantern 73 36.Sigma 1 37.Catwoman 33 <-------- 38.Azreal 17 39.Batman:Legends of the Dark Knight 82 40.Flash 113 41.Ultraforce*Spider-Man 1 42.Dawn 3 43.Hitman 1 44.X-Men:Askani'Son 3 45.Sword of Damocles 1 46.Wetworks 15 47.Phoenix Resurrection 0 48.Catwoman 33 ??????????(typo?) 49.Star Wars:Heir to the Empire 5 50.X-Men 2099 22 TOP 10 BLACK & WHITE Crow:Dead Time 2 Sin City:That Yellow Bastard Strangers in Paradise 10 Stray Bullets 8 Cerebus 204 Ranma 1/2 Part Five 4 Elfquest:Hidden Years 29 Elfquest:Shards 16 Elfquest:Two Spear 5 Elfquest: Kahvi 5 ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [8] New Comics Shipping /96, by Bobb Waller Here is the list of what's shipping next week, the week of 4/22/06 from Diamond and Marvel. ======================================================================== Acclaim Comics: Armed & Dangerous Special #1 Archie Comics: Archie #449 Archie Double Digest #86 Betty & Veronica Annual Digest #15 Veronica #53 Big Entertainment: I-Bots #0 Bongo Comics: Fleener #1 Broadway Comics: Powers That Be #5 Chaos! There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer system. They all give you a better explanation in their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are free to download from most BBS's. I recommend SLMR or OLX-TD for DOS to get started. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is LESS THAN $.75! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial information services available! :) So what else can you find on free BBS systems? There are plenty of files for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most powerful being in a online adventure! And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of replies and all the help you need to join in the fun! ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [B] BBSes Linked into CBN Here's the most up-to-date node listing for the COMIC BOOK NETWORK F=FIDO Q=QWK B=Both *=Major HUB -- ARKANSAS ------------------------------------------------------------- F* Karate & Comics & ...
