FIDO is an international BBS network that is one of the largest and easiest to find a local connection. If your local FIDO BBS does not carry the COMICS conference, ask the SYSOP to get it off the backbone and join us for some lively conversations about all things relating to comic books. The Comic Book Network has been afforded free advertising of our network in FIDO COMICS since we started CBN. The former Fido Moderator Wayne Bertsch and the Admin Team of CBN believe that more networks and conferences about comics only serve to help the rest grow. We have lots of letters and news this week and a couple of columns are back in their regular slots. I am trying desperately to get this issue out on Friday night so, on with the show! Subj: Black Cross Movie Date: 96-07-15 14:04:31 EDT From: Warnerhead Friends, Regarding the following news blurb from issue 65: >>Howie Long, former L.A. Raider, has signed to play the title role in Dark Horse's action-adventure "Black Cross". Production is slated to begin at Disney on March 1 and word is they are trying to get Russell Mulcahy ("Highlander" & "The Shadow") to direct. ``Black Cross'' is an action- adventure in the vein of ``The Road Warrior'' that was created by comic artists Steve Perry and Chris Warner for Dark Horse Presents #1. The project has been described as a futuristic Western set in a world of social corruption. The story is about one man's fight against mercenary members of the military who make a sport out of hunting people. Warner wrote the original screenplay.<< Thanks for running the piece--taken from Variety, I believe--but the original press release (from Howie Long's agent) has a couple of errors. First, Black Cross is my (Chris Warner's) exclusive creation. Second, the original screenplay is a collaborative effort between myself and Steve Perry, who is not a comic-book artist, but a highly regarded science-fiction writer whose credits include the "Shadows of the Empire" Star Wars novel. Despite these attribution glitches, we're all excited as hell about the project, and I'm particularly juiced about Howie's involvement, being a big fan of his NFL career. Talk about a legitimate tough guy! Also, I think Mulcahy ("Highlander," "The Shadow") has been signed. It looks like the picture will happen, but anything can happen in the wacky world of high-stakes entertainment. My fingers have been crossed so long that I doubt I'll ever be able to straighten them. Chris Warner [Thanks for setting us straight Chris. It's great to have the real story about this project. Please keep us up to date!] +++++ [An opinion about the recall of That Yellow Bastard] From: "Michael Rizzo" Subject: Sin City Recall Unless someone knows better, the rumor I heard was that there was a drawing in the book DH thought was too graphic, so they pulled the book. -- Michael Rizzo, Producer COMX-TV [SPOILER WARNING! You've been warned! ] [I have just seen the replacement copy, and like the original it does show genital amputation. I seriously doubt that Dark Horse would change it's mind about that scene or anything else after the fact. I even heard that THE TROUBLE WITH GIRLS was getting a lot of Hollywood attention. Best of luck to you, Gerry! Hank Kanalz [Thanks Hank, and another pro speaks up. . . ] From: Roland Mann <72623.776@CompuServe.COM> Man, I gotta admit...these email things are new to me and I'm not sure where I should send this. Please excuse my ignorance... [Works fine Roland, thanks for taking the time] In CBEM #67, one reader asked about Gerard Jones. I saw Gerard at the San Diego Con and spoke with him briefly (having known him from the Malibu stuff). He's currently devoting all his energies into Hollywood, writing screenplays. He didn't indicate that there was anything hard and fast yet, but did manage to suggest that he was enjoying himself quite a bit. Date: 96-07-15 12:27:38 EDT From: LSLILLY@acpub.duke.edu (Lee Sorensen) To: comicbknet@aol.com This is a question regarding a Richard Corben or Corben-style comic from the mid 1970s. I am a research librarian at Duke University searching for the comic title and issue number for a book a professor is working on a book regarding the depiction of the medieval world in the 20th century. Any information readers could offer would be extremely helpful. The comic was a small b/w with a glossy cover. It involved an attractive damsel being married to an unfortunate-looking noble, such as a prince. The story line ends with the damsel's true lover just missing objecting to the ceremony, and the prince and woman are wed. --> The plot thickens: Richard Corben wrotee back himself to tell me he has no recollection of doing such a work. While I must respect the artist's memory, both I *and* the professor remembered that this was his work, but that WAS 20 years ago. So perhaps we are looking for an artist working in a similar style (very similar), and published at least by 1976. We don't need to buy a copy of this rare work, we just need to know the full citation. However, holders of an issue could receive a thanks and whatever else once this book comes to fruition. For the moment, I would appreciate any information readers might have. My numbers are: Lee Sorensen 919/660-5994 or fax 919/660-5999 or email LSLILLY@acpub.duke.edu (preferred) +++++ [And here is an one worth looking at as well . . .] Subj: Is CBN ezine still published? Date: 96-07-13 11:55:41 EDT From: tamf@ix.netcom.com (Bill Field) Hi, David, I used to receive the ezine at this address, but it stopped a couple of weeks ago. Are you still doing it? If so, please add me back to the mailing list. Thank you. [rechecked the address and Bill did get the next issue, BUT he brings up an issue worth discussing] (BTW, if you are indeed still doing it, might I make a suggestion? Would you consider disallowing previous winners of your cheesy contest from further competitions? The fastest modem and/or hookup shouldn't allow a small group to monopolize, should it? Just my opinion, of course.) It may seem a small group monopolizes it but count up the winners. Out of 20 contests, 4 people have won twice, once because he submitted a question no one answered right. No one has won three times or more. That means we have had 16 separate winners. That sounds pretty fair to me. I have purposely restricted winners to only once a month as well. Also, the FIRST place that the Emag is available *every* week is the Web page. That guarantees that no matter how slow your Email is compared to others, even someone on Netcom which is where the Mag is sent from, you can still read it or download it from the web page first. The reasons for my hiatus have contributed to my Mid-Winter blues ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Approximately two and a half months ago the bubble popped on the South African comic book industry, my issue of Spawn, the FRANK MILLER issue!, did not arrive, all locally printed comics simply ceased to arrive. No explanation to vendors, no prior warning to readers, no nothing. Apparently readership response was not what was anticipated, and with the South African currency in free fall I think the cost of importing the material simply proved to expensive, so they just stopped! Could have given us some warning though. So I get this bad news, winter hits (Southern Hemisphere remember), I get them mid-winter blues, and my motherboard dies, (Cmos battery leaks). After I finally get the PC up and running, I'm off to Johannesberg, (to find the comic book shops of course), and then their were the election etc etc etc sorry about the shorty, just basically the bad news, next week I'll tell you guys about a successful local strip called "Madam & Eve" Caio Marc Sparks lives and works in Durban South Africa, for an Alfa Romeo dealership, and is desperately trying to figure out how to buy one. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [6] Recommended Reading by Justin Steiner First of all, I'd like to apologize for missing my deadline last week. I was in Kentucky the weekend of the Fourth for a family wedding and I just couldn't catch up when I got back home. I feel bad for missing the deadline but what can you do? Second of all, I want you to know I'm going back on a promise I made to you last time. I'm not going to do two smaller press books this time around because I want to cover the new Helix imprint at DC. So, you'll get one and one. Third of all, I would like to support David's recommendation that you read THE COPYBOOK TALES from Slave Labor Graphics, written by J Torres and drawn by Tim Levins. It is a fun read that deserves your attention and I'm not just saying that because they are my friends. TCT is quality work. I mean it. Go buy it! Fourth of all, enough with the chatter and on to the reviews... THE JAM #13 (Caliber Comics) 32 pgs. $2.95. By Bernie Mireault, Jeff Lang, and David Abu Bacha. 11904 Farmington Road, Livonia, MI 48150. THE JAM has had a few stops in its existence. It was first published by Tundra, then Dark Horse picked it up. Now the book has finally found a home at Caliber and assumed a bi-monthly publishing schedule. I couldn't be happier. This book is the story of Gordon Kirby, who may or may not be a super-hero. I've been reading it for about six issues now and I'm not sure. He does wear a costume at times but has no powers to speak of. It really doesn't matter, though, because the appeal of the book is that it is really about life. Granted, it's not necessarily life as we know it but it's close enough. The lead story in this issue (written by Jeff Lang and drawn by Bernie Mireault, the title's creator) finds Gordy in Philadelphia, where he has an appointment to deliver a message to someone. This someone is Mark Trimble. There's more to Mark than meets the eye, as Gordy witnesses. It turns out Mark has some paranormal abilities and operated as a quasi-hero known as the Kinetic. The bulk of the story consists of Mark telling Gordy the story of his being the Kinetic. At the end, however, he admits that that isn't the real story to hear. And we are promised this story next issue, which makes this a good time to give the title a try. Mireault has a wonderful artistic style and tells a story beautifully, both directly and indirectly. What I mean is that he clearly shows the reader what is occurring in the story through his art but he also adds to our understanding of the characters with sometimes abstract art. I know I'm not saying that right, so I'll give you an example. There is a scene where Mike is telling Gordy about making love to his wife for the first time since their baby was born. He mentions the fact that Harry (the baby) waited until they were done to wake up. To illustrate Harry waking up (and why he woke up), we get a picture balloon of his mother's breasts coming from the baby monitor. It's a subtle touch that speaks volumes. There are also some shorter pieces as well, though none of them involve Gordy. Mireault showcases work of his friends in most issues, sometimes in collaboration with them. This issue features "How Sweet It Is!," written by David Abu Bacha and drawn by Abu Bacha and Mireault (he inked it), and "Head Technician" by Abu Bacha. Both are interesting enough exercises, though not of the quality of the lead story. I really do enjoy THE JAM and think you will find something to like about it as well. If you're looking for something different, this is it. GEMINI BLOOD #1 (Helix/DC Comics) 24 pgs. $2.25. Written by Christopher Hinz. Art by Tommy Lee Edwards. 1700 Broadway, New York, NY 10019. This is the second title to appear from the Helix imprint (the first being CYBERELLA), a new line of creator-owned comics designed to appeal to both fans of comics and of science-fiction. In order to do this, editor Stuart Moore has signed top creators in both fields to produce these comics. And the line is off to a promising start. GEMINI BLOOD is a ongoing series created by Christopher Hinz and Tommy Lee Edwards. Hinz has written several novels related to this series (Liege-Killer, Ash Ock, and The Paratwa) but knowledge of them is not necessary to enjoy this series. In fact, I've never read them and I didn't feel like I was missing a thing (though I'm interested in reading them now). The first issue does a good job of introducing us to some characters and concepts that will make up the series. The title refers to a species known as the Paratwa. The Paratwa have a single consciousness that telepathically directs the actions of two physical bodies. That's two bodies, one mind. Which means that the bodies can be on separate worlds and still act as one. I find this very interesting. We are introduced to a Paratwa assassin known as Rolk. Rolk is doing damage to Flikker-Wixon assembly plants for reasons not yet known. So, Chime Flikker's daughter Melody decides to hire Nick and his team to kill "the gemini-blooded son-of-a-bitch (as Nick puts it)." Melody doesn't seem to have all of her marbles, though. But that's okay, because neither does Nick's team (Laura, Gillian, and Russell). Heck, dancing is vital part of their training. The characters are instantly intriguing and worth finding out who they really are. And a good mystery, such as the one surrounding these attacks, is always a good thing. That's not the only mystery either. It seems there are these shred monsters out there, the Shraddhan. We are promised more about them next time around. Edwards' art is a joy to look at. His work is edgy and moody yet he never forgets to tell the story. At times, he reminds me of Mike Mignola in his style but is certainly not a carbon copy. I would also be amiss if I did not praise John Workman's lettering. Nothing adds to a title with an edge more than Workman. He is a true master in the comics field. GEMINI BLOOD is off to a good start and is definitely worth price of admission. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [7] New Comics Shipping 7/22/96 by Bobb Waller Well here is the list of books scheduled to Ship the week of July 22, 1996: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acclaim Comics: All New Armed & Dangerous #2 All New Bad Eggs #2 Gravediggers #1 Sliders: Darkest Hour #1 Alaffinity Publications: Greymatter #11 Archie Comics: Archie #452 Jughead w/Archie Digest #129 Pals N Gals Double Digest #21 Veronica #56 Big Entertainment: I-Bots #4 Chaos! If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer system. They all give you a better explanation in their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are free to download from most BBS's. I recommend SLMR or OLX-TD for DOS to get started. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is LESS THAN $.75! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial information services available! :) So what else can you find on free BBS systems? There are plenty of files for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most powerful being in a online adventure! And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of replies and all the help you need to join in the fun! ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [C] BBSes Linked into CBN Here's the most up-to-date node listing for the COMIC BOOK NETWORK F=FIDO Q=QWK B=Both *=Major HUB -- ARKANSAS ------------------------------------------------------------- F* Karate & Comics & ...
