Was it the courage to go on after injury in Atlanta? Could it be the discovery of the black boxes in the waters off Long Island? A thwarted hijacking in Florida? The latest blunder by either candidate for US President? Not a chance! DIAMOND COMIC DISTRIBUTORS BUYS CAPITAL CITY DISTRIBUTION! Stop and think of the implications true believer. We are down to just two major suppliers to the direct comic retail business, Diamond and Heroes World (or Marvel if you will). I don't want to cast too many dispersions on this development, but remember the doom and gloom predictions when people started going exclusive? Well, EVERYBODY, for all purposes, is now exclusive. Will this bode well with better discounts, lower shipping costs, breaks for the smaller guys? I am not going to answer those questions now. There is sure to be lots of discussion for along time on this one. Perhaps a sampling of thoughts from prominent people in the industry will be in order here in the coming weeks. I sure would like to hear from those editors and creators who read this mag, if you care to share your thoughts with our readers. Meanwhile, time to put another edition to bed and catch KING KONG on TNT. Seeing it as an indy publication I figured that my local store would not necessarily have any extra copies of it, so I waited in the hope of a republication of the book. You see, I hate trying to get into a book after several issues, or in the middle of a story arc. When all six back issues were made available once again in the latest Diamond catalogue I ordered them. Looking forward to the book anxiously, but realizing that I would not see them for another three months I was quite suprised when I visited my store this week. It turns out that they had ALL of the back issues in stock, so rather than sending in this portion of my order to Diamond, they filled it from back stock of their own. Not anticipating the books being there, I was only able to purchase the first one at the time while they hold onto the rest for me. By the time I finally got home from work that night it was all I could do to keep from tearing into the issue, and when I started reading the book I wasn't disappointed at all. This book brings back memories of comics of my youth, while invoking images of Bone in my mind. I want to keep reading, and reading, and reading, but until I get down to the store to pick up the rest of my books next payday (two long weeks away) I won't be able to continue the series. I love the book for its simple depth of detail, and the facial expressions on the characters is fantastic. Thanks for the clue in on this book! This is one that will be going on my save list, and bumping yet another Image title to do so. You guys have me sold on the indys, and I buy more of them than I do books from Image or the other two. [Thanks for sharing your joy of discovery with us. It is always exciting to share a great work with others. Your comments were forwarded to B. C. Boyer.] +++++ From: jyancura@hearstnewmedia.com (John Yancura) To: comicbknet@aol.com Check out the Multimedia Newsstand. President and CEO Steve Geppi announced today that he has acquired selected assets of the Madison, Wis.-based Capital City Distribution. With his Timonium, Md. headquartered company already a recognized leader in the comic and entertainment related distribution industry, Geppi stated that this acquisition was "a reinvestment in the long term health of the comic industry." When the comic distribution business was dramatically altered in early 1995 by the announcement that Marvel Comics would begin direct distribution of its comics, Geppi quickly formed a strategic alliance with Marvel's chief competitor, DC Comics and other top comic publishers. Consequently, Diamond was able to maintain a healthy market position in a rapidly evolving business. Capital City likewise formed strategic alliances with a number of suppliers, but was nonetheless seriously stressed by the paradigm shift in distribution. The purchase price of Capital City's selected assets was not disclosed by mutual agreement of both parties, but it is expected that this acquisition will bring an estimated $50 million in sales revenue to Diamond. Geppi disclosed that Diamond is finalizing plans to enhance services to all of its customers. He also indicated that comic book specialty shops will benefit from cost savings as a result of consolidated orders and shipments. "Capital City co-founders Milton Griepp and John Davis have taken actions which should satisfy their obligations and provide uninterrupted service to their suppliers and customers, while also garnering a fair rate of return on a company they worked so hard to build over the years. They are to be commended. What's more, I want to thank all of the Diamond employees who have worked so hard over the years to put us in a position or make this acquisition, and to give special recognition to Executive Vice President and COO Chuck Parker and Vice President of Finance Larry Swanson for all the effort they put into helping to negotiate this deal," Geppi concluded. MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Inverse Ink, a Division of TAO Research Corporation, today announced four new multimedia comic book titles starring characters from Fox Kids Network's highly acclaimed Saturday morning animated lineup. Inverse Ink and Saban Entertainment, the worldwide licensing and merchandising agent for Fox owned properties on the Fox Kids Network announced a deal to bring the award winning shows "THE TICK," "EEK!STRAVAGANZA," "LIFE WITH LOUIE" and "BOBBY'S WORLD" into the digital comic book era two months ago at the Electronic Entertainment Exposition in Los Angeles. Clever story lines and sophisticated humor are at the heart of these titles, which have been children's favorites for the past several years and received top ratings in their time periods. Now, these witty animated yarns are being presented in a classic comic book style. User activated animation, morphing, and new computer style art add to their broad appeal, captivating kids to adult comic fans. Each CD-ROM multimedia title will support both the Macintosh and Windows formats on a single disk. They are planned to ship this October and will have an expected retail price of $9.99 each. THE TICK: "The Tick vs. The Uncommon Cold" For the first time this 400-pound blue crime fighter is in his native medium, the comic book, gone multimedia. "The Tick" can now leap out of the comic book page while bouncing across rooftops, fighting the world's most "unusual" super villains. Along with his trusty, mothy, smaller sidekick Arthur, "The Tick" fears no man or beast, so, not to worry. In this episode the evil Thrakkozog, uses DNA to clone our super hero to help him in his attempt to take over the world. The Tick and Arthur must recall their biology lessons and make use of some extra bodily fluids to help defeat the DNA monster Tick twin on the rooftops of The City. EEK!STRAVAGANZA: "The EeX Files" This cat's motto is "it never hurts to help." And that is the beginning of most of his hilarious troubles. In this spoof on The X Files and E.T., Eek! finds himself on the way to England when an unscheduled side-trip out of the bottom of the plane lands him in a Nevada secret alien spaceship testing ground. Commanded by Captain Amelia Eirheart, a group of bungling bureaucrats are out to see how much they can learn from this newly discovered alien. Some quick thinking and luck is required for Eek! to make it out of the base and on to England. LIFE WITH LOUIE: "Lake Winnibigoshish" Louie Anderson, the popular real life comedian, is the likeness for which this title is based. "Life with Louie" takes Anderson back to his adolescence in Wisconsin, where his animated character experiences all the hilarious and heartwarming misadventures of a young boy, mixed with a seasoned professional comedian's view of the world. In this episode, Lake Winnibigoshish is the destination when mom, dad and brother Tommy pack the station wagon and leave for summer vacation at 4 a.m. Fishing for the monster Husky Musky, flirting with Kelly Bassett, swimming and diving was the order of the day until the Lanza triplets befriend Louie. Will he betray his friend Kelly to hang out with the coolest kids at the lake? BOBBY'S WORLD: "One Clump or Two?" Howie Mandel is the voice behind four-year-old Bobby Generic ("That's GEN-uh-ric") as he experiences life through a preschool alter ego that offers vivid fantasies and unique observations about life. In this episode, Bobby must help a friend out of a sticky situation when he gets framed for throwing clumps of dirt. Inverse Ink, a division of TAO Research Corporation, is a developer and publisher of multimedia comic books for Windows and Macintosh computers. The company brings comic books to life through a process that morphs comic art panels into live action video or animation. The products are available nationally through major distributors, retailers and mass merchants, as well as comic book stores. Fox Kid's Network is currently the top-rated children's programming service in the United States. Its 19 hours of weekly (Monday-Saturday) programming are seen by more than 35 million kids and teens each month. Gerald Delaney second story pencils by Gerard de la Costa, inks by Nick Poliwko Black & White - $2.75 ($3.40 Canadian) subscriptions: $18/$21CAN/year Catfish Comics, 56 Clayhall Crescent, Downsview, Ontario Canada M3J 1W6 If you have been paying attention, you will know by now I am a fan of Catfish Comics, Sinnamon, and anything else by Furlan, Delaney, & Co. First, and foremost is the striking color covers on every single issue, they get better all the time. Mr. Delaney draws the most beautiful women you will ever see in comics and the color covers show it best. Now with that kind of talent around would Angelo let it go to waste? Not on your life! Each issue is filled with lovely women of various size and shape and often wearing little or nothing. Don't get the wrong idea, because the eye candy is just the icing on the cake to a well crafted story of a sexy super heroine trying to find her way in the world. This issue features a guest appearance by another of Angelo's creations, Bruiser, currently in his own series from Mythic Comics. It seems he is in town to meet up with an old foe, Dandelion, and before too long both he and Sinnamon are fighting each other and then both are fighting Dandelion. But the mystery begins as Sinnamon falls prey to splitting headaches when Dandelion uses her power. How that ends will further intrigue readers. Angelo weaves many plots through each issue. The most anticipated for me was Sinnamon's first date with the guy next door. These kids are really hot to trot but something always seem to get in the way. Does Scott finally get the icing on the cake? Well, that would be telling. This book is always a pleasure to read for the art and the story. There is just enough action, just enough humor and lots of great art to make it a well rounded fun read. There is partial nudity so Mature readers is the caution. If enough of you guys try it, maybe we can convince them to change from quarterly to semi-monthly! ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [7] New Comics Shipping 7/29/96 by Bobb Waller While this week was a small week, next week looks like bankrupt city!!!! However, many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS echo-mail system.... Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the continent and the world, many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you have the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network... There are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention sections for general conversation, collecting, gaming and other forms of entertainment. If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer system. They all give you a better explanation in their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are free to download from most BBS's. I recommend SLMR or OLX-TD for DOS to get started. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is LESS THAN $.75! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial information services available! :) So what else can you find on free BBS systems? There are plenty of files for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most powerful being in a online adventure! And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of replies and all the help you need to join in the fun! ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [C] BBSes Linked into CBN Here's the most up-to-date node listing for the COMIC BOOK NETWORK F=FIDO Q=QWK B=Both *=Major HUB -- ARKANSAS ------------------------------------------------------------- F* Karate & Comics & ...
