CBN node list ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] On the Net by David LeBlanc Back from my adventures in Ohio which included a trip to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. The building itself is unique in that from the air it resembles what us old folks lovingly refer to as a record player or turntable. The actual "Hall of Fame" is a square room on the top floor with small still videos of each inductee next to their autograph in silver on black glass. They are all in alphabetical order which makes me wonder what will happen when they need to add someone but there is no room in the right spot. Anyway, it is worth the $12.95 to get in and the movies, videos and memorabilia is extensive. ROCK IS is the movie you must see. Don't be intimidated by the line waiting to get in, it is 20 minutes long and well worth it, though parts are not for kiddies, language wise. While in Cleveland I got a couple of nice surprises. The Sunday Plain Dealer had a column by Mike Sangiacomo called ON COMICS. He discuss the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents situation giving essentially the details from the press release we ran last time, and adding some details, history, and his own thoughts. He also talked about The Mystery Men Stories #1 by Bob Burden of Flaming Carrot fame. I am sure I have heard of this column before and it was neat to see it first hand. You can reach Mike at: mikesang@aol.com The second surprise was a message from a local comic dealer who had read I was going to be in town and invited me to stop by. Unfortunately my time was fully scheduled so I had to pass. I have saved the message and hopefully it is still sitting there on my company laptop which is in the hands of the dreaded MIS department so I will acknowledge the dealer if and when I get it back. Meanwhile, the issues I would have reviewed this week are capably handled by Justin in JUST IN - say that ten times fast. We also have big news about the big blue boy scout, Suspended Animation and Rich's Revelations, and for once more letters to the editor than trivia guesses! Subj: Kelley Jones' return to Batman Date: 96-08-30 17:45:45 EDT From: rlaing@atcon.com (Roger Laing) To: comicbknet@aol.com After two issues of good Batman art (and story), we are now being forced to endure an extra long issue of Kelley Jones' depressing and distorted excuse for 'art'. Since the 'Troika' issue in Batman, we've had to suffer through old Robin and Nightwing, constipated Dark Knight, and lots of Ethopian secondary characters. There are much better artists that have been guest artists on Batman. Examples, Barretto, Aparo, Williams, and Seinkiwicz. Let's see one of these great artists on Batman permanently. Get Jones a satanic title like he wants (not Deadman, though). And Moench should be exorcised of Kelley's demon. If you agree, please let DC know. Let it ring on the computers of people everywhere. DC needs to start editing its magazines again. Not just wait for the bucks to roll in. [I do not regularly read any Batman comic. I read ROBIN and some special events, like BATMAN: Black & White.] [TRIVIA CONTEST] Last week's question: >In the early Valiant comics, what character was famous for this line: > "HELP! HELP! And step on it, ok?" Well, looks like I stumped you all! The question is not all that hard if you know where to look; in this case *early* Valiant comics. The earliest Valiant comics are the Nintendo Comics and in the one page intro to all the Super Mario Brothers stories we see Princess Toadstool tapping her foot and saying the above line. You can't all be Marvel geeks and silver age fanatics out there, or can you? It seems the pure DC and Marvel questions get the most response. Oh well, this week's question is a primer for the real tough one in our gala 75th issue! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ THIS WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION: From: M.Tomiak@ping.de (Michael Tomiak) What do the following comic books have in common: Conan the Barbarian # 241 Flaming Carrot # 27 Satan's Six # 1 X-Factor # 50 Marvel Comics Present # 32 IMPORTANT RULES NOTICE: The first correct answer to reach the editor wins the CHEEZY PRIZE(tm). The editor will be the sole judge as to which guess arrived first! Please be sporting and send only one guess at a time. LIMIT: ONE PRIZE PER MONTH PER PERSON! Submit your own trivia and win the CHEEZY PRIZE(tm) if you stump the readers! You MUST submit the correct answer with your question. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [3] CBN Insider - News, gossip and rumors from around the industry. Some major events have been revealed this week, while I was stuck in meetings in Ohio, so I missed the Comic Shop News. Still, the biggest news is presented separately; that being the Wedding of Lois and Clark not only in the TV show, but also in the comics the following week. DC is re-soliciting its early October Superman line to reflect the real events that will happen in those issues. Details posted elsewhere and in PREVIEWS next week (Sept 3). +++++ From Variety: Kevin Smith, who made his Hollywood breakthrough with ``Clerks'' but then bombed with last year's ``Mallrats,'' has been hired to rewrite the next SUPERMAN movie, scheduled to roll by next summer. The original script followed the popular "Death of Superman" story from the 1972 comic blockbuster as adapted by Gregory Porier. It is said Smith has lots of ideas for cameos from other DC heroes at the funeral such as Green Arrow, Hawkman, and Flash. +++++ From our mailbox: Hello there. You may remember me. My name is Chuck Satterlee. I am a writer. My current mini-series, AGONY ACRES, is on sale in the stores now. I am also writing a project for EVENT COMICS. Which brings me to the topic of my note to you. Laurie Bradach, EVENT COMICS' publisher, is not internet capable, so she asked me to send this press release to all of the on-line comic news services. EVENT COMICS PRESS RELEASE: TRACE BEALIEU, former star of MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE 3000, and one of the best brains in comedy today, is putting his formidable talents to work on an illustrated project for EVENT COMICS called HERE COME THE BIG PEOPLE. EVENT COMICS, publisher of the hit series ASH, which is soon to be a major animated feature from Steven Spielberg's DREAMWORKS STUDIOS, can't wait to see what Trace can do with nurturing alien caregivers and a hundred pounds of silly putty... +++++ Also from Variety: THE TICK is headed for the silver screen as an animated feature! Ben Edlund and his writing partner, Richard Liebmann-Smith have been signed by 20th Century Fox to write the script. +++++ From SMASH Magazine: Peter Parker will return as the one true Spiderman in SPIDER-MAN #75. "We listened to our fans, and they have spoken. It's back to basics," said Bob Harras, Marvel Editor-in-Chief. "We are going to put Peter Parker back into a Spider-Man costume." So, Peter's coming back to don the webs, but will he have company? What happens to Ben Reilly, the current wall-crawler? What about the child Peter's wife Mary Jane is carrying? Who is the real mastermind behind the Clone Saga? And what is the significance of those invitations being sent to Peter Parker's friends? All will be resolved in "Revelations," a four-part Halloween-laced storyline sure to shock even the truest of true believers. And, did someone say invitations? Stay tuned for further information... ALSO . . . The reception has been so great for DC's Kingdom Come that they are going into second printings of #1. arriving next week. . . "Ghost in the Shell" hit #1 in the Billboard TOP VIDEO SALES chart for the week ending August 28th. It is the most expensive and technically advanced Japanese animated feature ever made. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [4] Just In Justin Steiner Not much in the way of snappy patter this time around (or even not-so-snappy patter). I have quite a backlog of comics at my local shop (and not nearly enough cash to cut into it) but I'm still bringing on the reviews... HILLY ROSE #7 $2.95. 28 pgs. Written and illustrated by B.C. Boyer. Published by Astro Comics, 4195 Chino Hills Parkway, Suite 329, Chino Hills, CA 91709. I hate reviewing a comic by making comparisons with another comic but I'm going to do it here. HILLY ROSE is similar to BONE, not in content but in the overall feel of the book. That is, it is a humor book with serious overtones or maybe it's the other way around. That's the joy of titles such as these. The issue begins with a mall blowing up, which gives Hilly Rose another exclusive story for "The Daily Horn," a paper published by her father, Steeltrap Rose. This is the work of Sidney the Evil Incarnate Guy and the Weasel Boys, Vermin and Calhoun. Unbeknownst to Hilly, however, is that her father is financing these disasters in order to keep her from reporting for another paper. The art is crisp, clean and easy to follow, always a plus in black-and-white titles. Hilly is an attractive young thing but is not over-rendered and characters such as the Weasel Boys remind me of old cartoons, and not only in style - those boys are hilarious idiots. The whole story is a lot of fun, though there is plenty of development as well. There are a lot of mysteries to be uncovered here. I know I haven't done this book justice but it's getting late and I'm not very coherent. There is a "What Has Gone Before" in every issue to help new readers and the story really is accessible. I do warn you that you will want to purchase the rest of the series, however, but that's not a bad thing at all. Heck, the only bad thing about HILLY ROSE is that it's published only three or four times a year. However, if people start buying this deserving series in larger numbers, B.C. could probably do something about its frequency. Do us all a favor and buy a copy today. HARLAN ELLISON'S DREAM CORRIDOR QUARTERLY #1 $5.95. 64 pgs. Written and illustrated by various. Published by Dark Horse Comics, 10956 SE Main Street, Milwaukie, OR 97222. This is actually the second volume of the series adapting Ellison's work to comics form - it has previously appeared as a special and in five monthly installments. After sitting out the downturn in the market, DREAM CORRIDOR is returning as a larger quarterly book. After a few pages of introduction (written by Ellison and drawn by the incomparable Eric Shanower, as are all the interstitial framing sequences in the series), we are given the adaption of "One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty." Adapted by Jan Strnad and illustrated beautifully by Paul Chadwick, this story deals with a man who travels back in time to his earlier self and assures the road he will take in life. It is a wonderfully chilling story that resonates with the writer in me. Next is a shorter story by Ellison which is illustrated by Bret Blevins. "The Voice in the Garden" is a short story about the apocalypse and humanity's chance for rebirth. Well, that makes it sounds much grander than it is but it is a funny little tale even if it is one note. As with every issue of DREAM CORRIDOR, Harlan writes a new short story around the front covers done by a variety of artists. This issue's cover was done by Terese Nielsen and it is a beautiful painting of a green-skinned woman pointing a gun at a man in a forest. The story Ellison crafts does the painting justice - "The Lingering Scent of Woodsmoke" packs quite a punch. "Gnomebody" is a funny little tale adapted by John Ostrander, pencilled by Golden Age great Martin Nodell and inked by Jed Hotchkiss; "Opposites Attract" is a love story gone askew adapted by Tony Isabella and illustrated by Rags Morales; and "Rock God" is adapted by Ellison himself and illustrated by Neal Adams. All are interesting, though I find "Rock God" the least of the works here. Ellison has gathered top-notch talent to help him put together one heck of a comic book. The art ranges in style, as do the stories, but all are done with utmost care and precision. This book serves as a good introduction to Ellison's oeuvre - I have picked up White Wolf's first volume collecting his work based on my enjoyment of the comic. And I suspect that longtime Ellison fans will find this project worthwhile as well. Good stuff here. V For Vendetta Date: 27 Aug 1996 First for news! Last for reliability! Take the following with as much salt as you like. Hawkman will join the JLA, a new never-before-seen version of the character, to spin off into a series written by Mark Millar. Grant has been asked to write the Spawn annual but has lost Todd's phone number. Kirsty Walk, Newsnight presenter has just moved next to Grant. He's very happy about it because he hasn't had a gf in a few months, and he's always fancied Kirsty. Better than Jeremy Paxman anyway. Mark Millar is working on the Phantom Stranger for Vertigo. Mark and Grant don't like Dave Bishop or Fleetway. And now my buried lead. V For Vendetta looks like it will be made, directed by Jonathan Matthewson. And it looks like I'll be wangling a small part as a Fingerman that gets snuffed! The idea is that the book will be the "storyboard" for the film. We'll see what happens, eh? So... did you all order Dirtbag 7 from Twist and Shout Comics from your shop? If you didn't, you still can... includes more Bill The Clown, more Fabian Nicieza, more X-Flies and a great cover! Various We have seen the "hints" from Comic Shop News lately that BIG changes are coming for the Man of Steel. ABC broke the news on AOL that the Lois & Clark TV wedding would happen for real on the third episode airing October 6th. Then a week ago this appeared on the Fido Comics Echo I moderate: Date: 8/24/96 (10:21 AM) From: James Dunlop To: All Subj: Superman Gets Married ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the note from last month's Previews, when they said that the next issue of SUPERMAN would be retrosolicited in next month's catalog, I had a pretty good idea that something tying into the TV show would be happening. That, of course, is a wedding. Here's an advanced "preview" of Previews for November... THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE RETROSOLICITED. ALL OTHER ITEMS ARRIVING ON THESE DATES WERE OFFERED IN PREVIEWS VOL. VI, #8. ARRIVAL DATE: OCTOBER 9 SUPERMAN: THE WEDDING ALBUM COLLECTOR'S EDITION Written by various; illustrated by various DCU. Retrosolicited to arrive in comic book specialty stores the same month that ABC-TV airs the eagerly anticipated "wedding episode" of Warner Bros.' Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman - this may well be the biggest comics-related media event since the "Death of Superman"! It's all here under one cover, written and illustrated by a host of past and present Superman creators: the resolution of the Lois/Clark breakup; the proposal; the plans; the tux; the dress; the shower; the bachelor party; the bachelorette party; the trouble with in-laws; the big fight; the visit from the Dark Knight...And, oh yes, they get married, too! Both editions of this Special feature gatefold back covers that open to reveal the final story pages, similar to SUPERMAN #75. The Collector's Edition of this Special features - at no additional cost - a cardstock cover whose front features an embossed cardstock cover showing the Superman "S-hield," metallic silver ink printing, and both matte and gloss varnishes. For more information, see the feature article. FC, 96 pg. Miraweb Format $4.95 SUPERMAN: THE WEDDING ALBUM STANDARD EDITION Written by various; illustrated by various DCU. The same landmark story, art and gatefold back cover from the Collector's Edition of this triple-sized Special is also available in the Standard Edition, but with standard cover stock, different front cover art and no enhancement. FC, 96 pg. Miraweb Format $4.95* +++++ [OK, hoaxes have happened before, and going with a story from one post is not reliable journalism. DIAMOND'S PREVIEWS was due out this week but did not ship. An omen of a quick change perhaps? Soon messages started popping up on the Usenet DC newsgroup and SMASH Magazine (American Entertainment) ran the details on their web page. The article begins with almost word for word of the above text and more juicy details: ] "This triple-sized special will be an integral part of the ongoing weekly Superman continuity, and will not be an adaptation of the Lois & Clark episode. SUPERMAN #118, arriving October 2, leads directly into SUPERMAN: THE WEDDING ALBUM, and the story will continue through ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #541 (arriving October 16), ACTION COMICS #728 (arriving October 23), and SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL #63 (arriving October 30). With the exception of SUPERMAN #118, all of these issues will be resolicited in Previews Vol. VI #9, with all previous orders canceled. Check your orders today to make sure that your store will have enough of each of these titles on hand! "SUPERMAN: THE WEDDING ALBUM is a "jam" book, showcasing the collaborative talents of a host of the industry's finest artists, including the creative teams from all five regular Superman titles (ACTION COMICS, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, SUPERMAN, SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL, and SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF TOMORROW), previous Superman artists such as Terry Austin, John Byrne, Nick Cardy, Jackson Guice, Jerry Ordway, George Perez, and Art Thibert, and a sequence of previously-unpublished story pages illustrated by the legendary Curt Swan! Be prepared to read the phrase "marketing ploy" over and over in the coming weeks. My opinion? This will be HUGE! Fans and the curious embraced the Death of Superman and this will be even bigger with the TV wedding the weekend before. I have always wanted to see this event in the comic. It will add a whole new dimension, as did Peter Parker's marriage. It is NOT a bad thing but a natural event in our lives to want to mate with the one we love. As one who just celebrated 24 years with the same woman this week, I welcome the first and greatest comic hero to the club gladly. I plan to enjoy both the comic and the tv event and am also glad they have maintained a separate continuity in both media. Reserve your copies now folks. If there are any speculators left they will surely come out of the woodwork for this one.] ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [7] SUSPENDED ANIMATION by Michael Vance GHOST/HELLBOY SPECIAL #1/24pgs., $2.50, Dark Horse Comics/ words: Mike Mignola; art: Scott Benfiel/sold in comics shops and by mail. "A hundred years of mob war over gambling, prostitution, drugs, whatever. A century of thugs killing each other in the street with way too many innocent people getting caught in the middle." "Where does all that blood go?" It goes into the premise of the GHOST/HELLBOY SPECIAL, and this comic kicks. Violently. It kicks the city of Arcadia to its knees. Ghost is slain and raining death on the thugs of Arcadia. Hellboy is hunting Ghost for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, and for the added sales from two popular characters in one title. The result is a dark, violent tale of shadows. Undeniably, some will find its violence excessive, either ignoring or overlooking its proper purpose in a story, forgetting that even the Bible is violent. The Bible correctly painst violence as ugly sin, and its only justified use as defense. Unquestionably some will find the writing exceptional. Ugly, hard, cold, it sets the tone both for the decadence of Arcadia and its citizens. Tight, fast and pointed, it turns the second rate character of Ghost into a first rate player by making her The Shadow (another famous vigilante), in a dress. Unequivocally, the art is outstanding. Its balance of action and claustrophobic fatalism is intriguing. It knows when to say nothing in background detail. It implies more violence than is actually shown. Indisputably, this violence is acceptable, and the GHOST/ HELLBOY SPECIAL is highly recommended for unabashed comics fans. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer system. They all give you a better explanation in their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are free to download from most BBS's. I recommend SLMR or OLX-TD for DOS to get started. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is LESS THAN $.75! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial information services available! :) So what else can you find on free BBS systems? There are plenty of files for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most powerful being in a online adventure! And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of replies and all the help you need to join in the fun! ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [C] BBSes Linked into CBN Here's the most up-to-date node listing for the COMIC BOOK NETWORK F=FIDO Q=QWK B=Both *=Major HUB -- ARKANSAS ------------------------------------------------------------- F* Karate & Comics & ...
