Great news this week. Those of you who have been with us for a long time will remember that the CBN Insider evolved shortly after I became editor here. Up until then a regular feature was the Comic Shop News CSNsider provided by the authors with permission to reprint it. Shortly following my start, CSN decided not to publish the CSNsider electronically fearing they would alienate shop owners who actually pay for the Comic Shop News. So I began a news column which included the usual bits of news I picked up on the nets and at the end I reworded the items in that week's CSNsider which were not covered elsewhere in our mag. In *homage* to the original, that column became the CBN Insider. Well, nothing lasts forever. The CBN Insider ended last week. The good news is, Ward Batty has informed me that we can once again run the CSNsider in its entirety as a regular feature here. So this week, you get my "clippings from the latest CSNsider at the stores right now AND the CSNsider from next week's Comic Shop News, complete and uncut. I've renamed the weekly news column so as not to confuse anyone so you'll be getting even more info each week thanks to the folks at Comic Shop News. We also regret that Justin Steiner has decided to spend more time on his creative writing so his column is on hiatus for now. I have been very fortunate to have some great contributors to the mag so far, and Justin was no exception. We have some new folks lately trying their hand and are doing a fine job. If you like what they have to say, or not, or just want to give them an attaboy please send them Email and let them know it is not just me who reads their stuff. And in the misc. business column, I have been getting a lot of requests about what comics are shipping when, whether they have been cancelled, or why haven't they been solicited for a certain month. Please understand that I do not have anything to do with the industry, I am a fan also. I have no inside information with publishers or printers or distributors. The weekly list of what is shipping is not even put together by me, it is done by Charles LePage. His Email address is on the column every week. Like wise the news reports are gleaned from posts on the nets, news wire reports, magazines and the like. Do not assume I know more than I am telling because I tell all I can right in the mag. When there is a mistake I correct it but I am not responsible for the content in most cases, I am only the messenger. Next time I plan to talk a little about Email one more time, and a few more does and don'ts. But for now, let's find out what is going on out there. Thanks Gary] Sorry...I shifted into plug mode. -Gary. +++++ David: Having received the first download of the Comic Book Net Electronic Magazine, last week, I must say that I am considerably impressed. I enjoyed the letters column and that other comic professionals respond to it on a regular basis,( re: Isabella, Fabian etc. . .). [Don't forget that Furlan guy writes often too. Hey Angelo!] Secondly, your comic news was very timely and informative. The other on-line comic areas I have run across, seemed to be weeks behind the current buzz. But a lot of the stuff within your column was all, "news to me", as they say! Thirdly, I appreciate the fact that you are dedicated to promoting the small and independent press. Honest and objective opinions on these titles are truly rare in the mainstream comic press. It's kind of like a catch 22. . . can't get reviewed unless you are well read, and can't get well read unless you are positively reviewed! Now, don't let the fact that I publish my own small press title, Template by Head Press, fool you into believing that I am overly sensitive in this area,( that's my gratuitous plug for this letter ). I am all to familiar with this issue from both sides of the counter as I also served my tour of duty as a retailer for 5 years. Batty and C. Biggers This is the CSNsider from CSN #493, which will be in shops on 11/29/96. It is reproduced in its entirety with the expressed permission of COMIC SHOP NEWS! Bad news for fans of Jim Shooter's work at Broadway Comics: Golden Books Family Entertainment, which acquired Broadway Comics in part of a deal that also involved the family entertainment library of Broadway Video Entertainment, has announced that they are ceasing publication of the Broadway titles after the release of the Fatale TPB. According to Tracey Riese, "Golden Books will now focus on leveraging existing characters in Golden Books' library, which includes the dormant properties of Gold Key Comics... J. Winston Fowlkes and Jim Shooter, who managed Broadway Comics will undertake this effort." No word yet on whether Golden will attempt to license the Broadway characters, as they have done with Turok, Magnus, and Solar... In the CSNsider in issue #490, we incorrectly said that Kevin Smith's new film was called "Raising Amy" but it is in fact titled Chasing Amy... Jeff Smith has announced that his acclaimed series Bone will be leaving Image Comics in early '97 to return to Cartoon Books. "We went to Image Comics when the future of the distribution system was quite uncertain," Smith said. "Cartoon Books' original reasons for moving to Image have evaporated. Looking forward, we realized that it made the most amount of sense for us to once again consolidate all of the Bone comic book projects at Cartoon Books." The first Cartoon Books issue will be Bone #28, shipping in March '97; the Bone reprint series will continue to appear from Image until June with the release of Bone #20... A few issues back, we told you about Rob Liefeld's plans to "lighten up" the Maximum Press line; among the changes involved in that was the cancellation of the hit series Darkchylde. Since then, we've heard from several Darkchylde fans who wanted to know if they'd ever see the end of that storyline-and we have good news for them! Randy Queen, creator-writer-artist of the series, has confirmed that Darkchylde has been picked up by Image Comics with the fourth issue. There are additional benefits for fans, according to Image Executive Director Larry Marder. "Beginning with issue #4, Darkchylde has a new lower cover price of $2.50 and features extra pages of artwork. Plus, Darkchylde will also upgrade to a superior paper stock similar to Spawn's paper stock." Darkchylde #4 is rescheduled for February '97 release... DC's tenth anniversary celebration of Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns has proven almost too successful: orders for the statue were so much higher than DC anticipated that the sculpture will ship six weeks late, on December 26th. DC is offering an 8" square "rain check" certificate for each statue, printed with silver and black inks on parchment stock and shipped in an envelope so that those who were given the statue as a gift can let recipients know the figure is on its way. The signed/numbered slipcase set should be in comic shops as you read this, and the standard hardcover is following on December 11th... As you may have noticed, Maximum Press has decided to avoid lengthy gaps in their publishing schedule by releasing some titles originally solicited by Image under the Maximum Press banner. This means that several October-scheduled titles have shown up in November from Maximum; they will resolicit for other missing titles in December, January, and February... Alan Moore introduces Suprema, the female Supreme, in Supreme #46, a February release from Maximum Press... Shaft also gets his own solo adventure in February, with story and art by Rob Liefeld... Randy Reynaldo, writer/artist of the Rob Hanes adventure series, has announced that he will move his comic to Caliber Press in early '97. No date has been set yet, although tentative plans call for the first Caliber issue to appear in the spring of '97; at the time that Reynaldo makes the move, he will also change the book's name to Rob Hanes, Justice International... Comics legend Steve Ditko, one of the members of the original Marvel Bullpen and the co-creator of Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, the Creeper, the Question, is producing a new quarterly series, Steve Ditko's Avenging Tales, beginning in February of '97. "I was talking casually with Ditko one day," Fantagraphics president Gary Groth said, "and I just happened to mention that I thought the stories he did for Warren Publishing's Creepy and Eerie titles in the 60's using a wash technique were among the most beautiful drawing he ever did. He agreed and told me how much he enjoyed working in wash... I said that if he wanted to do any new work in wash, I'd publish it. He thought that was a swell idea and the result is Steve Ditko's Avenging Tales." Each issue will feature a lead story done in wash tones and backup stories in pen and ink... In March, Chaos! Comics unveils its first fully painted series, Suspira: The Great Working, written by Phil Nutman and painted by Mike Okamoto.; also slated for March release is Homicide: Tears of the Dead, a one-shot by Hart Fisher and Steve Scott with a painted cover by Brom. +++++ Visit our WWW site at: http://www.actwin.com/csn CSN is available exclusively at over 1,000 finer comic shops nation-wide. Various sources On Tuesday, November 19 rumors started to spread on the Internet that Marvel had once again reduced the work force the day before. A couple of pros acknowledged indeed a layoff had occurred and the Daily Variety reported the bare details that 115 staffers had been eliminated and 28 empty positions would remain unfilled, reducing the Marvel Comics employment by a third, to about 230. The Bloomberg Business News, via Newsday Long Island, cited Terry Stewart as the source of the news, saying Marvel Entertainment employs 1100 people overall. He would not say which writers or artists might be among those being let go. "Given the significant and continued downturn in the comic book market, we've taken steps to resize the business," Stewart said. Marvel's comic book business generates about 15 percent of the company's revenue. The word being passed around is that editorial is probably staying the same though one post suggests that the west coast operation is closing, as are the Ultraverse titles. Another says they dropped the entire accounting department, much of the art production staff, and some staff colorists. Recently we have relayed reports that the majority owner, billionaire Ron Perelman, has offered to pay $350 million for 410 million new shares in Marvel which would perhaps save the company from filing bankruptcy but also increase his ownership from 80% to 96% by diluting the other outstanding shares he does not own. As I understand it, the bonds outstanding have some interest payments due in February. The bonds are secured with Marvel stock, the 80% owned by Perelman's holding company, Andrews Corp. The rest is publicly traded. Andrews holds controlling interest in Toy Biz and plan to buy the outstanding shares, which are privately held, and merge it with Marvel. This would be done by exchanging Toy Biz stock for new Marvel stock worth $0.85, a lot less than their market value. This drastically increases the number of outstanding shares of Marvel, with a larger percentage being held by Andrews leaving the minority holders with only 4% interest. Andrews made the formal proposal on Wednesday, bidding $19 cash for each of the 27.4 million outstanding shares of Toy Biz and stating its intention to make it a wholly-owned subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment Group. If the offer is accepted Andrews further agreed to invest $350 Million in Marvel by acquiring new stock in Marvel. This comes after Marvel reported its fourth consecutive quarterly loss stacking up debt in excess of $600 million. Marvel has cut the number of titles it publishes to about half of what it was just a few years ago, has attempted to cut costs in paper and printing technologies, and has announced a price increase in many titles effective January. After the market closed Wednesday, Standard and Poors lowered its senior "secured debt" ratings on MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT to single-C' from triple-C'-plus. The Marvel holdings companies' corporate credit ratings are triple-C'-minus. All their ratings were placed on CreditWatch with negative implications on March 13, 1996 and they remain there as of this action. Pereleman's representatives reported to the bondholders of Marvel Entertainment Group Inc. this week that the four main operating businesses would together report a $100 million drop in revenue versus 1995. Friday's Wall Street Journal reported that the representatives warned Marvel would be forced to file for protection in bankruptcy court unless they approved the reorganization plan diluting the stockholders ownership. It also said that Marvel would need a bank waiver to tap a $15 million credit line and is discussing additional loans of $100 million to meet next year's needs. Citing an analyst who attended the private meeting, the WSJ article said documents show only Panini will show earnings in 1996, at $24 million. Losses of the other three units would be $11 million for Fleer/Skybox, $10-15 Million for Marvel Comics, and $2 million for Marvel Interactive. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [6] The Pen Is Mightier... By Brian Matus SNOWMAN 1944 #1 / SNOWMAN #0 (Flipbook) Black & white interiors with color covers from Entity Comics Writer/Artist: Matt Martin Co-Writer: Cameron Enders For those of you who missed the first mini-series from Hall-of-Heroes, SNOWMAN is about a Native American spirit that is trapped in a pair of crystal arrowheads. When the arrowheads touch the snow, his spirit is released, and he becomes a large snow demon out to get revenge on the white man that killed him and most of his tribe in the 1800's. A more elaborate retelling of the story is told on the SNOWMAN #0 side. The SNOWMAN 1944 side tells the story of what happens when an unwitting American soldier brings the crystal arrowheads to Nazi Germany in the winter of 1944 (of course). Much like the first mini-series, we don't see much of the Snowman in the first issue. The writer spends much of this first issue establishing different characters, and then finding different ways to kill most of them. Fellow fans of Garth (HITMAN, PREACHER) Ennis should be able to appreciate this. Aside from this, there is the anticipation of waiting for the Snowman to appear, surely bringing death and destruction with him. Then there is the question of who is going to stop this snow demon (and how). The last mini-series kept me guessing until the end, and I'm assuming this one will too. The artwork is clean, not overly rendered, and slightly cartoony, but not much more than Kelly (BATMAN) Jones or Tom (SPECTRE) Mandrake. Considering the fantasy elements to come in the story (most of this issue is based in reality, even if some of the situations are a little over the top to be totally realistic), a slightly exaggerated art style fits right in. Overall, a good combination of writing and artwork that will keep me around for another mini-series, and wary of the coming snow. Brian bmatus@suffolk.lib.ny.us ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [7] SUSPENDED ANIMATION by Michael Vance I wanted to write for pulp magazines when I grew up. Of course, pulp magazines had died before I was born. And most pulp writers were considered hacks, making around a penny a word. So, when I grew up I wanted to write for magazines that didn't exist, live in poverty and the disdain of my peers. That's why I'm jealous of Clay Washburn, even though he's only fictional. Clay was a WORDSMITH. (actually, Clay is a character in a comic book called WORDSMITH.) Stupid? But "the 1930s were a time of high adventure, at least in the novels. The Shadow, Doc Savage, the Spider and Cthulhu were all battling it out on the shelves of nickel-and-dime stores, and writers were pounding out the stories as fast as America could read them." I wanted to be pulp writer because even *I* could pound. I wish I could pound as well as wordsmith Dave Darrigo. I felt I was alive in New York City in the '30s and writing pulp. I felt I knew every character from the newsstand vendor, to Clay's mentor, successful detective novelist and former pulp writer, Fergus McBride. And when Clay became his own creations, Tombstone Tunney, "Congo" Carson and Brass-Knuckles Bendix, I joined him. I wish I could pencil like artsmith R.G. Taylor. His unique style, scratchy and design oriented, is complimented by perfect visual storytelling. Every character shares the distinctiveness in real human faces that is so sadly missing in many comics, and I love how his people slump, lounge, walk and gesture. And, best of all, you and I can be pulp writers without living in poverty and bearing the disdain of our peers. Highly recommended. WORDSMITH #1/$2.95 & 48pgs. from Caliber Comics. Sold at comics shops and by mail. MINIVIEW, TOO: THE WORLDS OF H.P. LOVECRAFT #1 [Caliber Comics]. The master of horror as interpreted by an apprentice talent with potential, this issue cried out for darker art and heightened anticipation. (Mr. Vance is a professional writer having written for numerous magazines like CBG, Starlog and Comics Interview. His work has appeared in over 500 newspapers and he's had work published by Comico, Renegade, Innovation and Rip Off Press. SUSPENDED ANIMATION appears in 14 publications reaching 214,000 readers in the U.S., Ireland and Portugal.) ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [8] My View David LeBlanc VAMPIRELLA LIVES #1 (Preview) Harris Publications Shipping December 1996 Story: Warren Ellis Pencils: Amanda Conner Inks: Jimmy Palmiotti Colors: Ruben Rude & I.H.O.C. Cover by Joe Quesada & Jimmy Palmiotti Editor: David Bogart In case someone does not know, Vampirella is a Vampire. In a prior series she met up with the daughter of the dark god Chaos, the evil Mistress Nyx who is her mortal enemy. Nyx and her henchman Hemorrhage have killed Vampirella's allies including her longtime lover Adam Van Helsing. In the end she also killed Vampirella . . . she got better. This story picks up with Vampirella returning from death, hence the title. First let me say I am not a reader of these comics and haven't been since the first Warren series many moons ago. Back then Vampy was very daring for her time in that you could only get her stories in those magazine sized books, the comic code ruling the comic rack's content at the time. Anyway, she was from another planet and unlike the traditional creature of the undead and all that, her physiology required that she drink blood, even the rivers of her planet, Drakulon, were rivers of blood. Talk about willing suspension of disbelief! Anyway, according to this tale, that was all a lie. She is really the daughter of Lilith, the first wife of Adam, who when cast out of the garden of Eden had gone to hell to have demon children that became the vampires of the earth. Vampirella is attempting to atone for her mother's misdeeds by ridding the earth of the rest of the vampires. So much for the set up. They have swept away the history of the character and said it was a lie and now set Vampy as an avenging angel of sorts. A good vampire against all the bad ones. Well the use of names like Drakulon and Van Helsing was stupid to begin with. If you want to tell a vampire tale tell your own, which is what I guess Warren Ellis is trying to do. Much of this first issue is set up, giving us Vampy's background, the fate of her mother, the introduction of a new associate and fellow vampire hunter, and a look at the ultimate enemy and her psychotic follower. It serves to give you a basis for people's actions and the lengths that they go to to do what they must, be it good or evil. The characters are being defined and their motivations revealed. Where this will lead is up to the next chapter. I found the text easy to follow and though much was in flashback it did not seem like I needed to go back to older issues to get more information than presented. Warren is moving things forward and the story seems interesting enough for fans of the genre. The artwork here is Black and White for the preview. I am starting to be able to see things in pencil and ink meant for colors versus work done for strictly black and white. Recognizing how the addition of color will add mood and texture is a challenge when the art relies heavily on it. That is not the case here. Rather the artists know enough to tell the story in the art and let the color bring out the little details and the tones needed to finish an already solid work. A few margin notes helped in the case where the color was key. The cover by Queseda is his usual fine stuff. As a finished product, I am sure the production will be top notch. Much has been said about the bad girl craze but this seems more than just a "lure them in with sex" and forget the rest type book. I don't have any other experience with the recent story arcs and history of Vampirella, but this work on its own is entertaining and well crafted. The story would not change much if she was wearing a bit more cloth, in fact you could make this another vampire with the same backstory and it would still be a good vampire tale. . . but it wouldn't be VAMPIRELLA. If you've been curious about this character, I'd say jump on with this series and check it out. It seems worth it to me. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [9] Top 50 comics/ top 10 black & white - Oct/Nov Comic Shop News CSN's Top Seller charts are based on orders reported by Diamond Distribution and sales reported by a cross section of comic specialty shops. Chances are, if you have a modem you have the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most of the boards offer all the message echoes in the ComicBook Network... There are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention sections for general conversation, collecting, gaming and other forms of entertainment. If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer system. They all give you a better explanation in their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are free to download from most BBS's. I recommend SLMR or OLX-TD for DOS to get started. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is LESS THAN $.75! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial information services available! :) So what else can you find on free BBS systems? There are plenty of files for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most powerful being in a online adventure! And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of replies and all the help you need to join in the fun! ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [C] BBSes Linked into CBN Here's the most up-to-date node listing for the COMIC BOOK NETWORK CBN Node Board Name Sysop Phone ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 23:102/0 Warner Robins Net Host Jeff Floyd 1-912-929-3762 23:102/1 The Congressional BBS Jeff Floyd 1-912-929-3762 23:103/0 Russellville Net Host Robert Wood 1-501-968-3910 23:103/1 Karate & Comics &...
