Turns out all our CBN nodes (see the "BBSes Linked into CBN" section) haven't gotten an issue of the e-mag since #41, and somehow, the blame fell on Mike Imboden, sysop of the CBN SuperHub, because the SuperHub distributes the e-mag to the nodes... But Mike can't do a thing with the e-mag unless he's _got_ it, now can he? In a fit of laziness or forgetfulness, I haven't uploaded to him an issue of the E-Mag since #41. So, I accept whatever blame is appropriate. Sorry, folks! In better news, we've got so many subscribers on the Internet that I've had to begin a _third_ distribution list! Spread the word! :) And in still better news, the web page (the URL of which is at the very top of this e-mag) has gotten over 1000 hits in just three weeks... wow! As I recently posted on the web page, the future of the network is up in the air right now. I am working with Jim Lawless, editor of the late Comics Jabber newsletter, to bring a message system (complete with QWK packet downloading, etc.) to the world wide web. While the system will be _nearly_ identical to the bases now set up in the Comic Book Net BBS network, the network will be brought to the web under a different name. Whether the current BBS network will remain is yet to be determined. Whatever its name, this E-Mag will be around as long as I can keep it around! Best, --Ry Editor The Comic Book Net E-Mag Xenozoid@cris.com ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [2] CSNsider #450, by W. Batty & C. Biggers This is the CSNsider from CSN #450, which will be in shops on 2/1/96. It is reproduced in its entirety with the expressed permission of COMIC SHOP NEWS! Challengers of the Unknown, one of Jack Kirby's early Silver Age creations for DC comics, will be returning later in '96, courtesy of writers Steven Grant and Len Kaminski; no artist for the new series has been named yet. Grant reports that while the Challengers team will focus on new members, familiar Challs will play a part in the series as well, along with other members of the Challs' supporting cast... Rich Buckler has announced the formation of Visage Studios, along with John Orlando, Naser Subashi, Winston Blakely, and Rick Buckler Jr. Their first book, Visages, is slated for early April release... At a recent retailers' meeting, Marvel announced that they have secured the rights to all of Paramount's Star Trek series; apparently Paramount decided that now wasn't the time to launch their own comic book line after all. No word yet on when Marvel's various Star Trek books will begin... London Night and Antarctic Press have a crossover in the works; look for the first meeting of Razor and Warrior Nun Areala this May... Entity Comics has secured the Stargate license; they'll begin with a Stargate film adaptation before expanding into original stories... Sigourney Weaver has signed on to star in a fourth Alien film; no word yet on what will be done to negate Ripley's death in the third film, but we'll all find out soon enough!... If you're looking for Immortelle Studios' previously announced Cynder/Nira X: Rifts, you might want to know that the new title is Cynder/Nira X: The Plague... Fleer has cancelled their Bump In the Night trading cards and is postponing their Sailor Moon trading cards until later this year... Patrick McGoohan has sold the film rights to The Prisoner, his classic surreal paranoid fantasy series from the 1960's; while he won't star in the film (and there's no word yet as to who will), he will write and direct it. Look for the ACG "hero" Herbie to return to the comic shop racks later this year... According to Marvel's publisher Jerry Calabrese, the company has a major Marvel Universe event, Onslaught, in the works for mid-'96; Calabrese said that this series will involve every Marvel superhero story in a way that will make each book a vital part of the overall storyline. The events of this storyline will lead into "Unfinished Business," Marvel's name for the Jim Lee-Rob Liefeld revamping of The Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, and the Fantastic Four... Calabrese also reported that X-Men and the Hulk were likely to make the transition to film, and might very possibly become Marvel's next big-screen projects... In the same conference Calabrese also said that Marvel is returning to creator-owned comics; their last creator-owned line, Epic, ended last year. No word on what their first creator-owned titles will be... Dark Horse will present the comic book adaptation of Solo, the new film starring Mario Van Peebles... Mike Manley has announced plans to launch his own company, Action Planet, and his own independently published series, Action Planet Comics. "Action Planet is the culmination of my many desires and frustrations that I have suffered and felt over my years working on 'Big Time' comics," Manley said. "I feel the need for control of my ideas and property as ell as more opportunity for personal growth as an artist." The first 48-page issue, slated for summer '96 release, will introduce new characters and concepts created by Manley, Phil Hester, Ande Parks, Aaron McClellan, and John Heebink... Broadway Comics will debut their first creator-owned titles late this summer or early in the fall; the company has already met with critical and fan success with their first superhero-universe line, which began in late '95 and will continue to expand throughout the year... Mark Evanier and Frank Miller have received hundreds of requests from artists who'd like to contribute to their mammoth Jack Kirby: A Celebration tribute book; the volume, which will feature artists' interpretations of Kirby characters from throughout his lengthy career, will offer art from a virtual who's who of the industry... Editorial ------------------------------------------------------------ Evolution ^^^^^^^^^ by Ryan Brewster There's no doubt about it: the comic book industry is in a radical period of change. What brought this change on was a combination of things... not JUST the "evil speculators" of 1993. Not JUST the lousy business moves by the big "M". A combination of these things brought this change on. But that is water under the bridge. The huge plunge of readership on the more popular superhero titles has issued the industry a wake-up call. More and more industry giants are acknowleging that perhaps, just perhaps, there is more to comics than men in tights. Maybe there's more this medium can give us than muscle- bound superheroes bashing each other's skulls in. As I noted in a previous column, the sinking of the superhero has been largely brought upon by television and movies. Despite glossy paper and computer coloring, comics are having a difficult time keeping up with the sophistication of modern special effects and animation. While the comics are losing longtime readers by raising prices and killing off or maiming characters, they are not catching the eyes of potential customers. WHO CARES? If you can watch it on TV every Saturday morning, why bother picking up a comic book that isn't nearly as flashy, and is much harder to understand? Why read a comic book, when you could watch the movie, with all its high-budget, computer-generated special effects? Another question: If comics are so dull, how can they hope to survive as a modern medium??!?! The answer to that is quite simple: the comic needs to offer something that movies and television can't offer. There are so many things that can be done with _words_ and _pictures_ than can be done with just _sound_ and pictures. I am not trying to say that superhero comics can't survive, or that all superhero comics are bad. I'm sure there are many things that can still be done within the superhero genre... but the company that lives by the superhero... The biggest losers in this scenario are DC, Marvel and Image comics. These are the three largest publishers of comics, and their big titles are (all together now) SUPERHERO comics! If these publishers wish to retain their status, they are going to have to look at different (better) ways to do things. The first thing they should do is TRY something. Marvel, DC and Image have the resources to put comic books together very nicely... and they _have_ put together some pretty flashy (for comics) superhero titles. Why don't they use these resources to do something _new_? (And when I say "new" I don't mean "Alter an established character so that it is no longer recognizable". That's not "new".) Why do they feel con- strained to science-fiction? Why not try publishing a book its readers can relate to? Next Week: Something Different --Ryan Brewster Xenozoid@cris.com 2. Industry News ------------------------------------------------------- Waid Leaves Captain America: 1/19/96 - Writer Mark Waid will no longer be on the Captain America title once it makes its transition to Rob Liefeld. Waid and artist Ron Garney will remain on the title until the end of its run. Rob Liefeld's Extreme Comics will take over production of the title after issue 454 or 455, as part of Marvel's "Unfinished Business". Chuck Dixon has been mentioned as a posibility to write the comic. Comics Featured in Business Week: 1/17/96 - A recent article in the New York papers reported on how spec- ulation caused the crash in the comic book industry. It also stated that DC will soon be slashing slow selling books. While in 1994, comic book stores were rated the 5th-fastest growing business, these comic stores went belly up faster in 1995. Business dropped 25% in 1994 and even farther in 1995. The Bandy Man Debuts in August: 1/18/96 - The X-Files creative team of Stefan Petrucha, Charlie Adlard, Miran Kim and Jill Thompson brings The Bandy Man to Caliber Comics in August. The Bandy Man is a 3-issue miniseries. Mark Badger Returns: 1/18/96 - Mark Badger (Instant Piano) will begin his new, ongoing, bi- monthly series Mark Badger's Marks and Angles from Caliber Comics starting in October. Caliber offers 99-Cent Comic: 1/18/96 - Caliber will offer a new 99-cent monthly comic, Calibrations, with two all new stories in each 16-page issue. One of the stories will be a serial and the other will be a stand-alone story. The first serial will be Warren Ellis' 5-part Atomspherics, and Terry Moore will follow with a 3-part serial. Elfquest Ends... Not: 1/15/96 - Richard Pini has announced that, despite rumors to the contrary, Warp Graphics' Elfquest comics will not end in March. Instead, they will come to a close in March. Confused yet? In March, all current Elfquest series will conclude. They will be followed in April by Elfquest: Metamorphosis. This one-shot will "bridge the gap between what has been and what will be for Elfquest". Lobdell to Write Iron Man: 1/18/96 - Scott Lobdell (Uncanny X-Men, Generation X) has signed to write Iron Man with Whilce Portacio providing the pencils, when the book begins production under Jim Lee in September. Malcolm Jones III Dies: 1/20/96 - Malcolm Jones III, who inked the first few years of Sandman, has died. Ninja High School: The Card Game: 1/17/96 - Antarctic Press recently announced the development of a new collectible card game based on Ben Dunn's comic series Ninja High School. The game, created by Kris Overstreet, is tentatively scheduled for a fall 1996 release, with beta-testing of the game beginning in early March. Romitas Retire: 1/18/96 - John and Virginia Romita announced their retirements last week from Marvel Comics. John was head of Marvel's production department, as well as an artist on such books as Amazing Spider-Man and Daredevil, and Virginia was Traffic Manager. The Tick Reprinted: 1/16/96 - Marlowe & Company and New England Comics Press will co-publish "The Tick - The Naked City" in May 1996. The trade paperback will reprint issues 1-6 of NECP's "The Chroma-Tick" series, and will sport a new wraparound cover. Marlowe & Company will distribute the comic to book stores, with New England Comics distributing to the direct market. 3. Reviews ------------------------------------------------------------ Ubiquitous Funnies (mini-comix) by Brian Kirk Moot Comics, 93 Sunapee St., Springfield, MA, 01108 (send a couple bucks to the above address, and he'll probably send you a few of his cool minis) These little mini-comics are "mini" in every sense of the word... except when it comes to enjoyment. Short and sweet, Ubiquitous Funnies (featuring Asinine Head) are cleverly concocted and wonderfully illustrated. Don't expect an issue of "Marvels" or anything, but the artwork in Ubi- quitous Funnies is very well done; a clinic on simplicity. These minicomics (I believe there's something like 17 or so issues) are great fun, and for a quarter apiece, well worth the cost. Hilly Rose #4 by B.C. Boyer Astro Comics, 4195 Chino Hills Pkwy, Suite 329, Chino Hills, CA, 91709 (Issues 1-4 available for $2.95 each + $1.50 per book shipping, from the above address) "Chapter 4: An Indepth Study of the Very Deep Thinking Mr. Harv" This is the first issue of this book that I have read, and I had no trouble at all picking up in the "middle" of things. A handy summary of what has happened so far appears at the beginning of the issue. If you haven't heard of this comic yet, you probably will. It has everything going for it that books like Bone, Cerebus, Strangers in Paradise and Stray Bullets did: a very strong, compelling story and some great simple, bold artwork. If you haven't read this comic yet... you probably should! :) Powers That Be #'s 1 & 2 by Various talents Broadway Comics (should be at your local comic store) Having joined the throng of comics geeks a mere 4 years (or so) ago, I never did see Jim Shooter in his prime. I missed his Marvel stuff, and by the time I was aware of him, his Valiant stuff was far too expensive anyhow. After reading one or two Defiant books, I dismissed him as one of those creators that a lot of folks like but that I just... _wouldn't_. Y'know? So I guess you could say I've never been much of a Jim Shooter fan. I am now. These books are great superhero comics. Finale is not as strong as the Star Seed story was, but is far superior to many other comics on my reading pile. If anything saves the superhero genre, it will be comics like these. Tales From the Bog #1 by Marcus Lusk Aberration Press 416 Cahaba Park Circle, Suite 107-B, Birmingham, AL, 35242 http://www.Bog.Com (Subscriptions for $18 available from the above address) This book reads _very_ quickly. The fact that there are 2 or 3 panels per page doesn't slow things down any, but the stories are very compelling and, as such, when you come up for air, you find you've finished the book! That is my only complaint, however. Tales From the Bog is a book to watch. While its apparant that, like Bone, this book takes a lot of its inspiration from Walt Kelly's Pogo, it shows a lot of promise even when judged on its own merits. If you see this one sitting on a shelf somewhere, GRAB IT. Akiko on the Planet Smoo by Marc Crilly Sirius Comics (should be at your local comics shop) This book, while well drawn, was not completely what I was hoping for. The storyline was a bit simple for my tastes. Still, the $2.95 was not totally wasted. I enjoyed the book despite a story that was, frankly, lacking. The art was endearing enough and the jokes were humerous enough to keep me entertained. I'll probably pick up the first few issues of the regular series, which begins in March with Akiko #1. Whether I continue to buy it depends on how the story develops. Akiko on the Planet Smoo was probably a good "testing the waters" issue. _______________________________________________________________________ Comicunications is copyright (c) 1995, by Ryan Brewster ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [4] Marvel vs. DC/DC vs. Marvel #2, reviewed by David LeBlanc MARVEL VS DC/DC VS MARVEL #2 Peter David Claudio Castellini & Dan Jurens Paul Neary & Josef Rubenstein Bill Oakley Gregory Wright First of all, if you are against this concept to begin with, thinking some sinister plot is afoot to meld the actual publishing empires or just think a major crossover is sacrilege than this series is obviously not for you. If you have been a long time reader as I have and often wondered how certain characters would interact from the two companies, how some would even fare in a fight amongst each other, then this is a pretty good look at one possible answer to those lingering questions. ***SPOILER WARNING*** o /|\ / \ \o/ | / \ _ o /\ |\ _\o /) | _| \o ( \ \ / | /o\ |_ o/ / ) O/_ | (\ o_ /\ / | \o/ | / \ o /|\ / \ In the first issue, published by DC, we got some of the set up to the story and saw characters start to shift between two universes. We saw a mysterious box in an alley, glowing with energy and in the end two unnamed entities becoming aware of each other. This issue starts to deliver the goods. The two identical, but different beings need to have their respective Universe to be unique since it is the most superior one, so they device a "contest of champions" to decide which Universe will prevail. 11 warriors from each Universe will fight it out. A *win* need not be to the death, just a pin or a knockout is sufficient. Of course our heroes reluctantly take to their fights so they can buy time to find a way to stop the destruction of whatever Universe would lose. But aside from the designated battles, Peter David, in his usual wonderful style, manages to throw in a lot of little sidelights, bits of humor, and subplots that entertain to make the book a true event to be entertained by, even if you don't like the idea or the outcomes. Another Pinky and the Brain cameo was a surprise and the Wolverine vs Killer Croc was a nice diversion. Running through the book is the story of Axel Asher, destined to be the shared character by the series end. He witnesses the melding of Gotham and New York, his ATM card does not work, and he wanders into an alley to get the revelation of the two universes in combat. We get just enough of his story to know he and his new found counterpart will play some part in the resolution of it all. Other sidelines worth noting are the meeting of Darkseid & Thanos; the neat way in which Captain America dispatches Bane; Wolverine and Gambit boosting the Batmobile as Mole Man invades the Batcave; the Scarecrow and the Scarecrow attempt to take Lois hostage but she is saved by that new Photographer for the Planet, Peter Parker, AND they return to work to find their is a new owner, Wilson Fisk - The Kingpin. All this stuff is blended into the story with just the right pacing to make it flow and making you want to see what is next - like Peter and Clark wondering how to ditch each other so they can change into costume. Heck, Rick Jones even meets Snapper Carr - a tip o' the hat to you old fogies who know who Snapper is! Now on to the real battles. Captain Marvel (DC) vs Thor start by acknowledging their religious (mythical gods) origins and is convincing enough. Those who wondered if Thor's lightning would effect Cap will have to check it out. Thor wins but loses the Hammer. "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy . . ." Well, who said a Wonder Woman wouldn't be worthy? Watch out Storm! Aquaman VS Namor must have been fun for Peter to write. If you read Aquaman you know he has an edge these days and while Namor proves he has the punch, Arthur uses a finny friend to deliver a knockout. Score one for each Universe. Flash vs Quicksilver was never in doubt by any but the most die hard fans of the mutants of Marvel. Wally has it all over Pietro in speed and though he is caught off guard he delivers the final blow as befits the fastest man alive. So this one ends, 2-1 in favor of DC. Jurgens drew the two DC victories and does a splendid job. In fact I was pleased with the art throughout and look forward to the next issue, wherein we learn the results of the Battles of the Century determined by the fan votes. Maybe Batman will even buy *THE CLUB* (tm) before this whole thing is over. I had a ball reading this one and hope they keep the high quality up though out. If you skipped the first issue, this one should make you a believer. Hello all at The Comic Book Net, Thanks for the excellent job that you do each and every week with the e-mag. I have found it to be an excellent source to keep abreast of happenings in the industry. Hey, theres a subject...the industry. I have to say looking back at 1995 was for the most part depressing. Calvin and Hobbes is gone, readership is slowly eroding etc. However, I found that titles like Avengelyne, Bone, Lady Death, Evil Ernie, Sin City, Thor, Gen 13 and Conan, made 1995 worth all of the hassel. Whats in store for 1996? More changes? Probably. I just hope the industry is stronger at the end of 1996, than it was at the beginning. Anyways, I know that you printed the date for the Generation X movie a few issues ago. I was wondering if you could e-mail me the date on which it is supposed to air. Thats all I have for now. Keep up the good work, it is tremendously appreciated. ____ _ __ __ _ / ___|| |__ __ _ _ __ ___ | \/ | __ _| |__ _ __ _ _ \___ \| '_ \ / _` | '_ \ / _ \ | |\/| |/ _` | '_ \| '__| | | | ___) | | | | (_| | | | | __/ | | | | (_| | |_) | | | |_| | |____/|_| |_|\__,_|_| |_|\___| |_| |_|\__,_|_.__/|_| \__, | |___/ Thanks for the kind words, Shane. That Generation X movie (which was _previously_ scheduled to air in January) will air on FOX on Tuesday, February 20, 1996 from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. Best, --Ry Xenozoid@cris.com ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [8] Join in the fun! You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However, many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS echo-mail system.... Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the USofA, and many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you have the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network... there are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!) conversation. If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer system. They all give you a better explaination in their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are downloadable from most BBS's. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is LESS THAN 75›! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial information services available! :) So what else can you find on free BBS systems? Theres plenty of files for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most powerful being in a online adventure! And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of replies and all the help you need to join in the fun! Best, --Ry, the editor, with assists from Ed DDukeshire. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- [9] BBSes Linked into CBN Here's the most up-to-date node listing for the COMIC BOOK NETWORK F=FIDO Q=QWK B=Both *=Major HUB -- ARKANSAS ------------------------------------------------------------- F* Karate & Comics & ...
